Renal consultant

Liverpool (Merseyside)
Government of Jersey
Consultant
Posted: 15 August
Offer description

Start the next chapter of your life and influence the next chapter of our Islands health care.

We are currently recruiting medical consultants across all areas to our progressive health service with brand new facilities.

Jersey is a unique place to live and work and being a consultant in Jersey is different. As a crown dependency, we are an Island nation which includes our own Health Care Service and a more favourable financial position:

* Salary: £114,667 – £170,947
* Maximum personal tax rate of 20%
* Government of Jersey Pension with no annual tax cap
* Opportunity to carry out private practice

Our health service is on the move with construction of a brand-new hospital starting in 2026.

The level of care that you can give here is far more extensive. With further investment into modern healthcare facilities, we work to ensure that our consultants can provide the best patient care possible. Our consultants have the time to make a difference to our patients, providing end-to-end patient care throughout their pathway giving consideration to their medical requirements in its entirety.

And as with many aspects of Island life, our Healthcare system is familiar enough for comfort but offers variances that mean our Consultants and patients have a different experience. A small Island community, we have one main hospital that acts as a hub with a small number of offsite facilities and the geography of our Island means there is a shorter commute for you.

The Specialty:

Jersey Hospital, which has 219 beds including an intensive care unit, has traditionally offered a stand-alone renal service. This service was led by a single Consultant for over 20 years, who recently retired, leaving the hospital reliant on locum clinicians to fill the gap. The renal service focuses exclusively on adult patients, with paediatric renal care delivered by University Hospital Southampton (UHS). Transplantation and vascular access surgeries are carried out at Cambridge University Hospital.

The renal unit currently manages 35 haemodialysis patients and 60 individuals with functioning renal transplants. It operates an 18-station dialysis unit, including six cubicles. Specialist nurses play a critical role, delivering acute and chronic dialysis, patient education, anaemia management, and post-transplant care.

The retired Consultant's role encompassed outpatient care, inpatient reviews, and cross-departmental advisory support, including intensive care. They also performed key interventional procedures such as dialysis line insertions, renal biopsies, and peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter placements, although only one patient is currently on PD. The Consultant was integral to the provision of acute dialysis services.

According to Jersey's national registry, approximately 2,720 residents (3% of the population) have CKD stages 3–5, with a mean age of 77 years. This prevalence is notably lower than the UK average of 6.1% among adults.
