Main duties
The Band 6 Occupational Therapist is an active member of a team that provides a high quality, evidence based occupational therapy service for patients with cancer. As a skilled practitioner, the post holder is a source of knowledge and expertise for patients, relatives and colleagues across disciplines. With the support of the Band 7 Occupational Therapist, they will organise occupational therapy activities within a defined clinical area and liaise with the multi-professional rehabilitation team to provide specialist input to education programmes.

Job responsibilities

* Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
* Work autonomously in ward and outpatient settings to provide complex clinical assessment of biomechanical, sensory, psychological, cognitive, perceptual and interpersonal deficits affecting functioning of individuals with cancer, their families and carers using advanced clinical reasoning.
* Develop and implement individual specialised therapeutic rehabilitation programmes based on activity analysis using a client-centered, problem solving approach.
* Develop and implement treatment and educational groups for patients and carers, such as Health & Well Being groups.
* Assess and prescribe complex wheelchair and specialist seating needs for examples such as paralysis, dystonia, major surgery, extreme fatigue, and pressure relief.
* Assess, design and fabricate static or dynamic splints to enable maintenance and improvement in upper limb functioning.
* Liaise with multi-professional team within hospital and community to achieve optimum rehabilitation outcomes and coordinated packages of support across health and social care.
* Take a key role in organising/discharge planning case conferences where functional independence is paramount.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
* Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy recognised by UK College of Occupational Therapists
* State Registration with Health Care Professions Council for Occupational Therapy
Other Desirable
* Membership of British Association of Occupational Therapists
* Membership of OPC (Occupational Therapists specialist section in Oncology and Palliative Care)
Skills Essential
* Knowledge of functional assessment and treatment techniques for oncology and palliative care patients, including physical, cognitive, psychosocial assessments and treatment, plus symptom and lifestyle management techniques
* Risk assessment and manual handling
* Ability to assess risks related to lone working and discharge planning
* Clinical reasoning, problem solving, reflective skills, autonomous working
* Excellent communication and educational skills; ability to teach patients and carers
* IT skills to enter data, prepare reports and documentation
Experience Essential
* At least one year’s experience in general physical therapy field
Desirable
* Experience with oncology patients and families
* Experience in supervision/appraisal, audit, outcomes measurement and clinical governance
* Accredited splinting/hand therapy and wheelchair courses
