Job Title: Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry

Role Summary: As a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry, you will provide expert psychiatric care and medical leadership to patients over the age of 65 with complex mental health needs within the Older People's Community Mental Health Team (CMHT). You will support the clinical team, contribute to multidisciplinary case discussions, and lead the provision of high-quality care in a community setting.
Key Responsibilities
* Clinical Leadership: Lead the clinical management of older adults with mental health disorders such as dementia, depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric conditions.
* Comprehensive Assessments: Carry out thorough psychiatric assessments of patients, ensuring accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plans.
* Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside clinical psychologists, social workers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver holistic care.
* Care Planning: Develop, review, and implement treatment plans for patients, ensuring person‑centred care at all times.
* Consultation and Supervision: Provide expert advice to junior staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team. Offer supervision and mentoring to more junior doctors and trainees.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Work with family members, carers, and external agencies to ensure continuity of care and support for patients.
* Education and Training: Participate in the training and development of junior staff and provide educational support in the field of old age psychiatry.
* Research and Audit: Contribute to audits and clinical research in the field of psychiatry for older adults, ensuring continuous improvement of services.
* Crisis Management: Provide expert crisis intervention and emergency psychiatric support when required.
Required Qualifications and Skills
* Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent).
* Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register in Psychiatry (or eligible for inclusion).
* Specialist knowledge in Old Age Psychiatry and experience working with older adults with complex psychiatric needs.
* Postgraduate qualifications in Psychiatry (e.g., MRCPsych or equivalent).
* Experience in clinical leadership roles, especially in multidisciplinary settings.
* Excellent Communication Skills: Ability to engage with patients, families, and colleagues effectively.
* Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
* Commitment to Professional Development: Continuing medical education and personal professional development in old age psychiatry.
Working Hours
* Shift Pattern: Monday to Thursday, 09:00 to 17:30, covering a 52‑shift roster between January and April (with some flexibility required).
* Total Shifts: 52 shifts in total.
