About the role

The Moredun Research Institute

The Moredun Research Institute (MRI) is a world-class centre of excellence in the research and development of tools to investigate and control animal health and disease. Our mission is to improve animal welfare, health and production through cutting-edge scientific research. We are seeking an experienced Research Scientist to join colleagues at the Virus Surveillance Unit (https://moredun.org.uk/research/surveillance), as well as taking on responsibility for managing the linked Containment Level 3 laboratory.

The role

We are looking for a driven and detail-oriented scientist with a passion for virology, diagnostics, and safeguarding animal health. You will join the MRI’s Virus Surveillance Unit (VSU), where your expertise will contribute to the development and delivery of cutting-edge diagnostic tools that support animal disease surveillance across the UK and beyond. As a Virus Surveillance Unit Scientist, you will play a key role in both the day-to-day delivery of high-quality diagnostic testing and the development and validation of novel assays for the detection of infectious diseases affecting livestock and wildlife. If required, we will also offer expert training in working at Containment Level 3, with the opportunity to take on management of our CL3 laboratory suite. You will work closely with the VSU Lab Manager within a multidisciplinary team to ensure compliance with QA and biosafety standards, while contributing to the ongoing evolution of our diagnostic capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Diagnostic laboratory: to assess sample submission and test requirements, advise customers, perform specialist diagnostic tests within the required turnaround time and monitor reagents/consumables and restock when required. You will also maintain cells and virus culture within the unit and transfer related skills when required to assist in the development and execution of diagnostic tests.
2. Assay development: under the guidance of the Head of the VSU and the VSU lab manager, develop new assays for the diagnosis of infectious diseases of livestock and wildlife and perform independent testing to validate commercial assays. In conjunction with the Head of the VSU, liaise with research teams to foster collaborations and support external funding applications.
3. H&S and QA: in conjunction with the VSU Lab Manager, maintain and monitor H&S policies/procedures in the lab and monitor and record assay performances to ensure compliance with QA standards. Regularly update and review records for test results, Risk Assessment, Standard Operating Procedures, and sample storage. Monitor performance of lab equipment (as required) to ensure compliance with QA standards. Support ISO17025 and UKAS accreditation processes through documentation, risk assessments, and SOP maintenance.
4. Management: contribute to the management of laboratory spaces to ensure safe and optimal access to shared facilities within and outwith the Virus Surveillance team, in support of the VSU lab manager. Manage a Containment Level 3 laboratory space to ensure safe and optimal access, including liaising with engineers and contractors and training and supervision of staff and visitors. Supervise and support junior staff where appropriate, including eventual line management responsibilities.

Why Join Moredun?

At Moredun, you will have the opportunity to join a world-class surveillance group in a collaborative and forward-thinking environment. We offer access to state-of-the-art facilities, a dynamic and supportive research community, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the health and welfare of livestock and wildlife. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the success of Scottish livestock and wildlife surveillance and to progress your training and development.

Experience required

5. A degree (preferably PhD or equivalent experience) in virology, microbiology, or a related biological science
6. Strong laboratory experience in diagnostics, assay development and validation
7. Experience of working in a Containment Level 3 environment is an advantage, but training can be provided
8. Track record of performing virological, serological and/or molecular-based techniques for diagnostic testing; experience of developing and validating testing would be an advantage.
9. Previous experience working within QA diagnostic standards (e.g. ISO 17025) or similar accredited schemes. Ability to interpret and troubleshoot assay results.
10. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-standards environment.
11. Ability to communicate with stakeholders of different backgrounds, especially when evaluating the need for new diagnostic test development
12. Experience with standard IT packages and specialised software (e.g. LIMS and instrument-specific software).
13. Impeccable time management and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written, face to face, by telephone and by email. Ability to deal with a wide range of people with tact and diplomacy.
14. Awareness of the importance of confidentiality, GDPR trained.
15. Awareness of and experience in the adherence to Health and Safety Regulations; experience in training or supervising colleagues in this area will be an advantage.
16. Capable of prioritising workload, plan activities taking into account deadlines and resources and maintain a wide range of relationships in the context of the management of a CL3 containment laboratory, including contractors, engineers, health and safety personnel, security contacts, laboratory users and prospective users.
17. Ability to manage a budget, laboratory supplies and equipment to best effect.
