We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We’re revolutionising an industry. That’s a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.
We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Senior Engineer - Test Civils (Modularisation Development Programme).
Role Purpose:
The Rolls-Royce SMR, Development Engineering Function has four capability areas; Research & Technology, Verification and Validation, Test and Commissioning.
Reporting to the MDP Test (Design) Manager, the Senior Test Engineer Civils works as key part of one or more integrated project teams to define Civil Engineering demonstrator / test solutions to support the development of the CKoP (Civil Kit of Parts). The CKoP is a key element of Rolls-Royce SMR’s modular approach to delivering a Nuclear Powerplant with build certainty and is being developed and tested via physical demonstrators as part of the Modularisation Development Programme.
This role involves close collaboration with a variety of external partners, suppliers, and internal stakeholders, requiring strong civil engineering expertise and excellent design integration skills. A high level of drive and the ability to influence others are essential for delivering high-value demonstrator and test data that support key business objectives. Initially, the focus will be on optimising plant design decisions, followed by generating critical evidence to validate and verify the design and underpin the safety case.
The scope of this role currently covers the Modularisation Development Programme (MDP). The MDP is an integrated programme which safely develops and proves design, delivers production capability, demonstrates the digital thread, and determines SQEP requirements for the full modularisation lifecycle.
Key role criteria:
Test Programmes:
The role involves defining, planning, and executing test programmes to generate essential evidence for design development, verification, and validation, including the use of scaled or sub-element testing where appropriate. It requires a proven ability to deliver design projects on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Communicating design concepts effectively to design and project teams—using sketches, CAD models, and P&IDs—is a key aspect. The role also demands experience in developing design solutions from initial requirements through to detailed definition, along with the production of comprehensive design documentation such as requirements specifications, engineering calculations, test specifications, and technical drawings. A solid appreciation of risk management principles is also essential.
Civil Engineering
Technical experience of steel and concrete structures such as buildings, retaining walls, foundations, fuel pools or similar, working to British Standards, Eurocodes and American standards (such as ACI, ASCE and ANSI). Technical experience of working with modular structures in both steel and pre-cast concrete and other novel construction techniques involving high levels of integration with other disciplines, e.g. products with integrated mechanical, structural and EC&I elements.
Experience of working in the nuclear industry (or similar highly regulated industry) including experience in the design of seismically-qualified structures and those subjected to extreme external and internal hazards
Communication and Influence
Ability to communicate complex topics clearly and concisely both internally and externally to Rolls-Royce SMR. This also includes formal communications such as technical report writing and presenting at gate reviews to the appropriate stakeholders.
Demonstrate a clear analytical approach and a methodical work process and have a systems-thinking mindset, including experience of collaborating within multi-discipline teams to define and manage system requirements.
Technical Coaching & Reviewing
Alongside managing the delivery and quality of their own work, Senior Engineers will have a responsibility to drive up the quality of the wider team’s outputs, through coaching and reviewing.
