Advanced Learning Support Assistant (SEND / SEMH) – Scarborough
Location: Scarborough
Pay: £14-£18 / Dependent on experience and qualifications
Contract: Long-term, term-time (possibility of permanent)
Role: Advanced LSA (Learning Support Assistant) – Primary & Secondary
About the Role We are hiring on behalf of a specialist provision in the Scarborough area that supports students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs. This role will be based in a mixed-age setting, working across both primary and secondary phases. As an Advanced LSA, you will play a vital part in supporting challenging behaviour, delivering 1:1 and group interventions, and mentoring other LSAs to help build a consistent, therapeutic learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide targeted 1:1 and small-group support for students with SEMH / SEND needs
2. Work collaboratively with teaching staff to develop and implement behaviour support plans
3. Support, coach, and mentor general LSAs to ensure consistent strategies across the setting
4. Use de‑escalation techniques, emotional regulation strategies, and positive behaviour approaches
5. Assist with structured learning activities, social skills work, and therapeutic interventions
6. Monitor, document, and report on students’ behaviour, academic progress, and safeguarding concerns
7. Communicate with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals (therapists, social services etc.)
8. Promote a calm, safe, and inclusive environment where all students feel supported
Person Specification / Requirements
9. Proven experience as an LSA, ideally in a SEMH, SEND, or challenging-behaviour provision
10. Qualification: LSA qualification (, Level 3) or higher, or equivalent experience working with SEMH / SEND students
11. Strong behaviour management skills and experience using de‑escalation techniques; training in approaches such as Team Teach or MAPA is highly desirable
12. Excellent communication, patience, and empathy, able to build strong relationships with young people who may demonstrate challenging behaviours
13. Willingness to obtain an enhanced DBS check
