Overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 5 or Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join the Adult Learning Disability (LD) Service covering Derby City and South Derbyshire. The post includes community visits, working from home and from a base. You will be part of a small, friendly, and supportive team of Speech and Language Therapists, with alliance access to North Derbyshire for broader support.
As a member of the team you will have access to regular caseload and clinical supervision, plus an annual appraisal to support you to plan and achieve goals from your Personal Development Plan. There are opportunities to explore specialist areas within the LD team and develop professionally through shadowing and attending training courses or clinical excellence networks.
Main duties
Work as part of a Multidisciplinary Team alongside Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Therapy Assistants and Psychiatrists. You will have your own caseload to prioritise and may be involved in supervising Band 5s and assistants if employed at Band 6. You will also participate in service projects and improvements. The approach is person-centred and focuses on high quality assessment and intervention to support people and their near family members to communicate as effectively as possible.
The successful candidate should be able to work well independently and as part of a team. Knowledge and skills in learning disabilities are advantageous.

Job responsibilities
Physical and Mental Effort: The post involves local travel by car to cover a broad geographical area, travelling within the area frequently, and transporting service users as needed. Some work will occur in service users’ homes, with awareness of hazards. The role requires computer literacy and daily IT use. There is frequent concentration required for assessing patients, including complex funding applications and specialist reports.
Emotional and Working Conditions: Potential exposure to verbal/physical abuse, safeguarding incidents, distressing situations, and challenging behaviours. The role may involve engaging with service users and carers with complex needs and working in community environments with possible unpleasant conditions.
