Overview
Join to apply for the Senior / Principal Hydrologist role at Haskoning.
About the Environment Resilience Renewables Group: At Haskoning our Environment Resilience Renewables Group has been providing environmental solutions for our clients for over 30 years in the UK. We combine market-leading technical excellence across a wide range of environmental disciplines with an understanding of clients’ ambitions, needs and pressures. Our water environment team is working on high-profile infrastructure projects, including a new water recycling facility and transfer pipeline for Southern Water, a new reservoir at Havant Thicket for Portsmouth Water, and multiple onshore transmission cables for offshore wind farms across the UK. We are leading the development of strategies to unlock development in river catchments affected by nutrient and water neutrality restrictions, identifying nature-based solutions for flooding, water and nutrient management, fish passage projects and river restoration, floodplain habitat enhancement and flood risk management projects.
We specialise in delivering high quality services related to flood risk, geomorphology and catchment management, river and freshwater habitat restoration, hydrology, hydrogeology, surface and groundwater quality across a range of developments from National Significant Infrastructure Projects to smaller planning applications. We have supported clients in sectors including water, renewables, energy, industry, ports, residential development, charities and the public sector. Due to continued growth, we are looking to grow our thriving water environment team.
The Role
We require a Senior / Principal Hydrologist to join our flood risk and hydraulic modelling team, delivering hydrological analysis to support hydraulic modelling projects for clients such as the Environment Agency, IDBs, LLFAs, Rivers Trusts, infrastructure and renewable energy companies. You will work on projects including urban and rural flood risk, nature-based solutions, natural flood management and hydromorphology. You should have skills in hydrological modelling, data analysis, data interpretation and presentation of hydrological results. You will share our passion for Enhancing Society Together by collaborating with clients to achieve outcomes while maximizing sustainable solutions.
Note: The role is unlikely to comprise a full-time delivery of hydrological analysis. It may suit a part-time candidate or someone with a wider skillset who can support the team in flood risk and/or hydraulic modelling projects.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Hydrology Expertise
* Demonstrate significant technical experience in various hydrology areas and deliver suitable approaches to hydrological analysis, with ability to defend these approaches with clients, regulators and stakeholders
* Deliver flood frequency analysis using FEH methodologies, statistical methods, rainfall-runoff methods (ReFH2), FSR methods, Lowland/Pumped Catchment methods, and related hydrological methods
* Deliver hydrological analysis for low flows for weir removal, fish passage and river restoration projects including channel design and wetland features
* Application of LowFlows2 modelling software
* Hydrometry and fluvial hydraulics knowledge to inform hydrology; analyze and report hydrometric data including flow gauge rating curves and hydraulic performance
* Hydrological and hydraulic analysis for natural flood management (NFM) and nature-based solutions (NBS)
* Understand how different hydrological analysis approaches influence hydraulic modelling outcomes
* GIS Proficiency: QGIS, ArcGIS and other open-source datasets/tools
* Flood Risk Assessment: provide specialist hydrological input for Flood Risk Assessments with understanding of UK flood risk policies
* Technical Reporting: write clear, concise reports for varied audiences (Environment Agency, LLFAs, IDBs, Private Developers, Public)
* Project Management: preparing proposals, managing resources, subcontractors, contracts and invoicing; act as project lead for smaller, less complex projects
* Quality Assurance: contribute to best practices and innovative approaches
* Collaboration: strong team player with ability to communicate with consultants and interdisciplinary teams
* Client Relations: build and maintain client relationships and liaise with Project Manager, Project Director and Hydrologic Modellers
* Mentoring: provide support to junior staff and promote quality and innovation

* Bachelor's degree in an analytical subject (Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, Physical Geography)
* Minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience in development and delivery of hydrological studies and catchment analysis
* Understanding of wider catchment hydrology and catchment processes
* Hydrological modelling to derive design event peak flows and flood hydrographs using FEH methodologies (Statistical Method, ReFH2), FSR methods, Lowland/Pumped Catchment methods
* Low flow studies/drought assessments using LowFlows2 modelling
* Proven GIS experience in QGIS and ArcGIS
* Excellent communication and analytical skills
* Ability to write high-quality concise technical reports
* Ability to manage commercial aspects of projects
* Ability to carry out technical reviews of hydrological analyses
Desirable:
* Master's degree in an appropriate subject
* Chartered or working towards chartership with CIWEM, ICE, or similar body
* Experience in 1D and 2D fluvial hydraulic modelling (Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, ESTRY) and/or surface water modelling
* Experience preparing Flood Risk Assessments
* Experience in water resource assessments and modelling
* Basic programming knowledge (R, Python, Excel Script, VBA) to support analytical tools
* Database management for hydrological data analysis
* Experience with UK planning process and dealing with private/commercial developers
