Job Summary

CDDFT wishes to recruit x2 trust grade doctors to our Tier 2 rota. This is an excellent opportunity to further develop obstetrics and gynaecology surgical skills. The successful applicants will join a friendly and collaborative team of consultants, associate specialists and doctors in training. The post is clinically based and includes both obstetrics and gynaecology. Full participation in the on‑call rota at tier 2 level (1:8) is required, with on‑call duties based on labour and gynae wards and reviewing emergency admissions along with SHO support.

Daytime duties will include labour ward, elective operating, ward cover and support, and clinical expertise in maternity day assessment units, along with antenatal clinics. Specialist antenatal clinics also run, providing opportunities for learning and development. Gynaecology services include early‑pregnancy scanning and acute gynaecology unit, elective surgery, general gynaecology outpatients clinic, specialist clinics including menopause, and ward cover. We have an extensive gynae‑oncology service and the successful applicant will be expected to work with this team, including robotic surgery assistance.


Main Duties of the Job

Senior duties in both obstetrics and gynaecology, covering antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology wards; antenatal and gynaecology outpatient clinics; the Day Assessment and Triage Units and the Early Pregnancy Unit. Ultrasound training is available and encouraged. Participation in theatre, rotation through the gynaecology oncology team and active participation in audit are expected. There is the opportunity to participate in specialist interest clinics, including Obstetric Medicine, Fetal Medicine, Rapid Access Clinic and Outpatient Hysteroscopy Clinics. You will also have an opportunity to attend teaching sessions that take place weekly and the Departmental monthly meetings.


About Us

We provide hospital services from two acute sites – Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester‑Le‑Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community‑based settings and providing care in patients' homes. Job Responsibilities

A registrar (specialist trainee 3‑7) and SHOs (specialist trainee 1‑2, GP and F2 trainees) support a 1:8 rota for each level. A consultant is resident for the majority of the time, after 10 pm they can be off site if work allows and may be called in to support when needed.

Regular morning ward rounds of in‑patients in both obstetrics and gynaecology. Assessment of patients in Day Assessment / Triage in obstetrics, the Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynecology Unit is required during the day and labour ward cover is also integral. Elective Caesarean Section lists occur daily during the week when junior trainees are supervised operating on cases suitable for their level of training by consultants and senior trainees. Trainees are expected to participate in regular appropriate handovers to their colleagues and follow up patients with abnormal results. There are opportunities for supervised scanning in both obstetrics and gynaecology and to learn and improve on surgical skills.

There will be opportunities to be involved in undergraduate teaching and support if interested.


Person Specification


Qualifications – Essential

* MBBS, MBChB or equivalent.
* MRCOG part 1.
* Full GMC registration.


Qualifications – Desirable

* MRCOG part 2 & 3.
* LSCS – intermediate/advanced.
* Rotational Instrumental Delivery.
* 3rd/4th degree perineal repair.
* Simple operative laparoscopy.
* Completion of relevant courses: basic surgical skills, perineal repair.


Special Skills & Knowledge – Essential

* Independent with non‑rotational instrumental delivery: forcep, ventouse.
* LSCS – basic.
* Perineal repair.
* Surgical management of miscarriage.
* Audit: evidence of active participation.
* Language: All applicants must have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate for effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues. This may be demonstrated by academic medical training in English, or by IELTS scores (Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 6, Reading 6, Writing 6) or equivalent evidence.


Special Skills & Knowledge – Desirable

* LSCS – intermediate/advanced.
* Rotational Instrumental Delivery.
* 3rd/4th degree perineal repair.
* Simple operative laparoscopy.


Experience – Essential

* Relevant UK NHS experience and ability to provide complete employment history.
* Experience of working in O&G at SHO level.


Experience – Desirable

* Experience of working in O&G at tier 2 level.
