Join Our Team as a Deputy Head of Pensions Finance & Payroll
An exciting opportunity has come available for a Deputy Head of Pensions Finance & Payroll to support the leadership and management of a high-performing team. In this pivotal role, you’ll be responsible for ensuring members’ benefits are paid accurately and on time, including the smooth and compliant processing of pensioner payroll. You’ll oversee the day-to-day finance and payroll operations for Member Services’ clients, while also ensuring the accurate recording, reconciliation, and reporting of scheme financials.
What you’ll do:
* Oversee accurate processing of pensioner payrolls (306,000+ records), HMRC interfaces, and monthly payments (£313m).
* Ensure lump sums and payroll are paid correctly and on time, using appropriate funding and international payment methods.
* Collaborate closely with the Head of Pensions Finance & Payroll to lead teams, align with business strategy, and drive continuous improvement.
* Manage scheme contributions and AVC investments, ensuring reconciliations, authorised transactions, and accurate member records.
* Review and sign off monthly accounts, financial reports, and reconciliations, meeting client and audit requirements.
* Maintain robust financial controls, submit PAYE/tax returns, and act as a key reference point for financial regulations.
* Support third-party supplier management, client onboarding, and external audits (including SOX and Brightwell AAF).
* Contribute to strategic initiatives, project work, and process improvements across finance and payroll operations.
This role would suit someone who:
* Proven experience leading finance and payroll teams, ideally at middle management level (5+ years).
* Track record of delivering client-focused finance or payroll services in a complex environment.
* Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills to drive high-quality outcomes.
* Professionally qualified in finance (e.g., ACCA or CIMA).
* Solid understanding of transactional processing and financial control frameworks.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to improve processes.
* Commercially aware, with the ability to assess risk and deliver value.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly
