Job Introduction

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead the Video team as part of BBC Sport’s new Stories department.

You will be responsible for overseeing sports video content on BBC TV, iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app. We’re seeking someone who is ready to take on a key leadership role, supporting the Audio/Video Editor. The successful applicant will have a passion for and knowledge of the output, and great people skills which are needed to manage such a large team. They will deputise for the Editor when they are away, and will be an integral part of the wider Stories management team.

We want BBC Sport’s output to reflect and understand the audiences we serve across the UK and around the world, and the experiences of people from under-represented groups (eg. people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds, people with lived experience of disability, individuals within the LGBTQ+ community and those from lower socio-economic groups). We are therefore actively seeking individuals with skills or experience that can help contribute towards ensuring we maximise the diversity of our coverage and content.

Main Responsibilities

The Assistant Editor will work with the Audio/Video Editor, Senior Journalists and production teams to oversee sports video content on BBC TV, iPlayer, BBC Sport website and app.

The successful candidate will provide editorial direction and creative drive, helping to lead a team of journalists and broadcasters to produce output to the highest standards within agreed budgets and schedules. They will provide strong editorial leadership with the ability to offer guidance, advice and personal support as required.

They will fully support the Editor in providing clear editorial direction and creative drive across the output, giving strong leadership with the ability to offer guidance and advice. They will chair editorial meetings and take responsibility for planning the shape of the output, and they will deputise for the Editor when they are away.

They must promote diversity in BBC Sport through our output, and within our production and on-air teams. And they will be expected to encourage and deliver greater collaboration and build even stronger relationships with other colleagues across the Stories department and wider BBC Sport division, plus BBC News and iPlayer.

Are you the right candidate?

You will have a track record of overseeing either live or on-demand video content production and/or television, and an understanding of digital video trends, opportunities and how to turn them into successful content plans.

We are looking for someone with demonstrable leadership aptitude and skills and is keen to put them into practice. You will need to show that you can work collaboratively, with the ability to motivate staff to produce innovative and imaginative journalism, high-quality live programming and coverage of major sports events. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a balanced and objective editorial judgement based on a thorough understanding of the audience, editorial guidelines, programme and departmental objectives. They will work closely with the Editor to ensure the department maintains very high standards and is also a great place to work.

This role is as much about having the skills to manage people with various levels of experience and from lots of different backgrounds as it is about being across all of the output. The job requires a lot of resilience and determination, and also a grasp of the main challenges facing BBC Sport and the wider BBC.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief.
