Bangor University invites applications for two full-time Lecturers in Anatomy to join the North Wales Medical School (NWMS). With our first cohort of medical students having started in September 2024, this is a unique opportunity to contribute to an exciting phase of growth in a new medical school. You will play a key role in shaping innovative, digitally enabled anatomy education and join a small anatomy team within the supportive wider school that is committed to delivering an outstanding student experience.
The successful candidates will be educated to PhD level or equivalent in a relevant subject area (or be close to completion), and passionate about undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching. You will be expected to develop and deliver dynamic teaching, including the use of the digital Anatomage Table, support research projects, and engage in pastoral care and academic administration. You will teach across the medical programme and contribute to other School programmes including Physician Associate, Medical Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmacology.
We are seeking individuals who are passionate about education, innovative in teaching delivery, and eager to support the development of our School. The role also offers the opportunity to pursue an educational qualification and Advance HE fellowship.
The postholders will work under the Anatomy lead and be responsible to the Dean of Medicine and will be based at our main campus in Bangor with occasional travel to our clinical training sites and Wrexham campus if required. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance. *Fractional part-time appointments and Job Sharing arrangements will be considered, and this will be discussed with candidates at interview.
The successful candidate will be expected to commence by the start of 2025/26 Academic year.
The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable for this post.

The Project
College of Medicine and Health
The College comprises three Schools: the North Wales Medical School, the School of Psychology and Sport Science and the School of Health Sciences. The College and Schools have well-established formal links with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and local primary care providers. This enables an integrated approach to developing research, training, medical and healthcare education that serves the needs of North Wales.
North Wales Medical School
The School is the focus for medical education and research at Bangor University, and offers a career-spanning portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including Medicine, Physician’s Associate, Biomedical Science, Medical Science, Pharmacology and Medical Molecular Biology with Genetics.
The School’s portfolio continues to expand with the new Pharmacy MPharm programme due to commence in September 2025.
The School’s mission is to champion and promote excellent interprofessional medical, health and social care, research, scholarship, teaching and learning, quality and values with people who use services, practitioners, and stakeholders; to promote language and cultural competence relevant to local, national and international partners, and to provide an inclusive culture and environment for staff and students within the School.
Bangor University Medicine programme is delivered through a collaborative approach, creating an excellent medical educational environment that exploits the unique characteristics of the region. The programme includes state-of-the-art campus facilities for basic science, clinical simulation and skills training. Clinical exposure is gained across an extensive network of General Practices, primary, community and secondary care facilities across North Wales in close collaboration with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Students gain a rich experience across urban, rural and remote healthcare settings that reflect the spectacular geography of the region. The school’s first intake started in September 2024 with Cardiff University School of Medicine acting as contingency partner, with an initial intake of 80 entrants into Year 1 and Year 2. Student intakes will rise to 110 Year 1 and 30 Year 2 (graduate) entrants by 2029.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Academic Duties
* Plan, prepare and deliver lectures responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.
* Plan, prepare and deliver practical anatomy sessions utilising the Anatomage table and innovative teaching strategies.
* Lead small group case-based learning tutorials for phase 1of the medical curriculum.
* Demonstrate relevant knowledge and appropriate experience to apply scientific education for students on current medical and related programmes.
* Motivate students to proactive engagement in learning and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work.
* Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
* Contribute to developing and marking student assessments.
* Teach on and support other School and College programmes.
* Act as personal tutor to a number of School undergraduate and postgraduate students, providing advice, guidance and support.
* Actively engage in strategic and project-related activities that maximise student engagement, and that mitigate the risks of attrition.
* Undertake the role of module coordinator and/or contribute to module co-ordination procedures (if module co-ordinator).
* Contribute to the development of new programmes and modules.
* Undertake other educational administrative duties and responsibilities (e.g. membership of School boards and task groups, addressing/supporting undergraduate and postgraduate student experience, contributing to community engagement).
* Keep abreast of new professional, educational and related social, economic and technological developments.
* Maintain and develop scholarly activities in line with University and College strategies.

Qualifications/Training
Essential
* Postgraduate qualification in a subject area relevant to anatomy.
Desirable
* PhD (or be close to completion) or equivalent in a subject area relevant to anatomy.
* Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCertHE) or be close to the completion OR recognised by the HEA or Advance HE as a Fellow against Descriptor 2 of the UKPSF.
Essential
Experience/Knowledge - Teaching
* Sound knowledge of the relevant subject area.
* Evidence of teaching in clinical and/or academic settings.
* Evidence of supporting the pastoral needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Desirable
* Experience of module development and delivery in Higher Education.

* Experience of supervising undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
* Evidence of scholarship relating to learning and teaching through publication of books, articles and/or papers in high impact academic journals.
