Overview
Consultant/Senior Consultant Fire Engineer for Arcadis. The role involves Fire Safety Engineering work, including desktop reviews of design projects on initial stages and supporting the fire safety discipline across projects both in the UK and internationally. The incumbent will primarily work in the building sector, with occasional opportunities in rail and other multidisciplinary projects.
Role accountabilities
* Development of Fire Safety Strategy reports
* Means of Escape analysis (evacuation time calculations, escape routes and exits widths, travel distance assessments, and evacuation strategy development)
* Assessment and understanding of main British Fire Safety Regulations and Standards applied to buildings (e.g., Approved Document B, BS9999, BS7974, BS9991, BB100, HTM 05)
* Assessment and understanding of British fire safety legislation and standards for rail projects (e.g., London Underground standards, Network Rail standards such as LUL – S1371, Railway Safety Principles and Guidance, BS9992)
* Risk-based interpretation and application of these documents and other codes of practice including international standards (e.g., NFPA 101, NFPA 130)
* Third-party design review/verification
* Participation in internal design team meetings and external client meetings with initial supervision
* Support in developing Fire Risk Assessment reports for buildings and rail sectors
Additional skills (advantageous)
* Hazard identification
* ALARP understanding
* Knowledge of PAS 9980, EWS1 forms, and façade engineering
* Understanding of Building Safety Act 2022
* Fire Risk Assessment principles
* Understanding of fire dynamics, heat transfer and smoke behavior in enclosed environments (undergrounds/tunnels)
* Basic understanding of Active Fire Protection (AFP) and Passive Fire Protection (PFP) measures
* Basic knowledge of fire modelling (zone models such as CFAST; CFD-based models like FDS, Pyrosim, SMARTFIRE)
Qualifications & experience
* Strong experience in fire safety engineering
* Relevant engineering or numerate degree (e.g., Fire Engineering, Mechanical/Civil/Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Physics, Chemistry, Maths) from a recognised university
* Qualifications recognised by a professional engineering body with aspirations to full membership
* Chartered Engineer preferred or working towards Chartership
* Ability to work independently on some tasks and contribute to a team
* Willingness to take on challenges and support other experts when needed
* Ability to help prepare proposals and marketing material for our Fire Safety capabilities
* CSCS Card desirable
* Ability to obtain Security Clearance desirable
