Job Summary

Consultant Vascular Surgeon (11 PLH) delivering a vascular surgery practice that includes on‑call, same day emergency care (SDEC), outpatient clinics and operating. The post requires 1 in 9 on‑call commitments (possibly changing to 1 in 10) and a consultant‑of‑the‑week rota. Outpatient appointments are managed at Royal United Hospital Bath, Southmead Hospital and Cossham Hospital. All surgical and endovascular interventions (excluding endovenous procedures) are performed at Southmead Hospital, the network’s arterial centre.


Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver inpatient care within the dedicated vascular ward (Gate 26A) and the surgical admissions unit, supervising trainees and maintaining the 32‑bed capacity.
• Undertake daily ward rounds, audit of patient outcomes and management of complex referrals from agencies such as the National Vascular Register.
• Operate 18 four‑hour operating sessions per week in two theatres, including a hybrid suite; joint consultant operating for both open and endovascular aortic aneurysm surgery.
• Conduct morning hot clinics and diabetic foot clinics, and run Friday morning hot clinic as part of on‑call duties.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings (MS Teams) Monday‑Friday, with a separate non‑urgent MDT on Wednesday mornings and attendance at morbidity, mortality and research meetings.
• Provide medical optimisation through G‑POC reviews, cardio‑pulmonary exercise testing and pre‑operative preparation clinics; support by vascular anaesthetists.
• Attend to teaching, guiding medical students, foundation trainees and providing formal tutoring opportunities; contribute to the hospital academy when appropriate.
• Engage in research activities, supervising ND intensive studies, providing clinical research support and advancing publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Participate in management and audit projects, contribute to NHS management issues, and develop leadership and teamwork within the department.


Person Specification (Other)

* Must reside within 30 minutes or ten miles of the principal place of work.
* Must hold the appropriate home office work / residence status to provide work in the UK.


Qualifications and Registration

* BM, BS or equivalent.
* FRCS (Vasc) or equivalent.
* Maintain full registration with the GMC, or hold a CCT in Vascular Surgery (or equivalent) with entry on the GMC Specialist Register at appointment date; specialty registrars must be due to be awarded a CCT within 6 months of interview.


Training and Experience

* Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
* Minimum 8 years postgraduate experience, including higher surgical/medical training and three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent.
* Training in diagnosis and treatment of common vascular surgery conditions including diabetic foot sepsis.
* Desire to develop a sub‑specialist thoracic aortic practice.


Further Training, Management, Audit

* Evidence of recent CME and reasonable training progression at this career stage.
* Experience in audit projects and written reports.
* Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
* Knowledge of the political context within which the NHS operates.


Research, Teaching, Publications

* Proven teaching ability and willingness to undertake teaching of medical under‑graduates and postgraduates.
* Proven record in research, willingness to undertake further research and ability to publish in peer‑reviewed journals.
* Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients; effective teaching skills.

* Proven ability to build and maintain effective teams.
* Positive attitude towards wider healthcare team members.
* Strong organisational and compassionate leadership skills.
* Track record of positive development and change management.
