Weare inviting applications to fill our Research Fellow vacancy at The LeedsTeaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the Department of Breast Surgery and The LeedsInstitute of Medical Research.
Thispost will commence on 01/07/2024 and is a fixed term appointment for 1 year with the provision of extensionfor an additional year subject to satisfactory progression. This is a researchpost with protected sessions to learn and carry out laboratory research with anaim of submitting a successful thesis for MD in translational breast cancerresearch at University of Leeds. The proposed research project will involveinvestigating the link between nutritional factors and chemoresistance intriple negative breast cancer. The project supervision will be provided by DrJames Thorne (Associate Professor, University of Leeds) alongside clinicianswho have strong background in translational breast cancer research.
Therewill be a service component involving 3 clinical sessions which will help thebreast surgery service with its outpatient department workload. There is noprovision for on-calls or theatre sessions. There will be plenty ofopportunities for the fellow to undertake clinical research and/or qualityimprovement projects, as well as enhance their teaching skills.
Candidatesmust be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license topractice by the intended start date.

Main duties of the job
DUTIESOF THE POST
Thepost will have protected research sessions which will involve working with themolecular scientists and the technicians at University of Leeds, collecting andanalysing clinical data, lab work and regular supervisory meetings.
Therewill be 3 clinical sessions additionally to support the Breast service. Thesesessions will be in the clinics to help meet 2 week targets. There will be noon-call commitments.

INFORMATIONABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Anopportunity has arisen for a Research Fellow post to join the Breast Surgeryteam at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT). This will be a 12 monthpost commencing in July 2024 which will be extended for a further year subjectto satisfactory progress. This post is to take forward the research aspirationsof the Unit. The post holder is expected to work on a translational breastcancer research project with an aim of submitting a thesis for an MD atUniversity of Leeds.
Thispost is suitable for doctors who are in core or higher surgical training level.This post is not currently recognised by the Deanery for formal postgraduatesurgical training though the candidate is expected to register for a higherdegree (MD) with The University of Leeds subject to appropriate progress of theproject. The post has funding for the laboratory consumables.

KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Thecandidate should have experience in breast surgery, especially in theoutpatient setting. The post would ideally be suited to a candidate in core orhigher surgical training level who has an aspiration to develop their academicand research skills with a future intended career in Breast Surgery. Previousexperience in molecular research would be desirable but not essential. Previousexperience in thesis writing for BSc or equivalent, data analysis, completionof clinical research projects in breast surgery, and peer reviewed publicationswould also be highly desirable for the post. 1. More than 24 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice
2. Ability to provide complete details of employment history
3. Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
4. Evidence that present achievement andperformance is commensurate with totality of their period of training
5. At least 2 years experience in surgical specialities by the time of intended start date.
Desirable
6. Experience in assessing symptomatic and screening breast surgery referrals.
7. Confident in triple assessment.
8. Has trained in breast surgery posts/placements previously.
9. Appropriate career progression with placement in recognised training posts.
