Job Description:
We are currently looking to appoint a Research Associate in Materials Science within the Sustainable Environment Research Centre (SERC) at the University of South Wales. This project focuses on delivering a Knowledge Exchange Partnership (KTP) funded by UKRI and Dragon Recycling Solutions Ltd. Most work will be conducted at the partner site.
The main purpose of this position is to develop an enduring process to recover critical raw materials during the recycling of lithium-based batteries at an industrial scale, involving separation, purification, and analysis of materials. The Associate will have access to professional development workshops and opportunities to lead sectors of the project, with potential for a permanent position. The work will be collaborative, involving academic teams at USW and industry professionals at Dragon Recycling Solutions Ltd in Tredegar, South Wales.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, experienced in handling a broad range of materials and compounds, and skilled in material characterization techniques. They should demonstrate initiative, leadership, and a proactive attitude, with the ability to prepare technical reports and contribute to publications in material sciences and battery recycling. The role involves laboratory research and implementing methodologies at the industrial site.
The post will primarily be based at the industrial partner's site, allowing the use of a broad range of research skills across Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, and Materials Sciences.
The Research Associate is expected to work independently and as part of a team, with leadership responsibilities. The role includes achieving project objectives through experimental research, conducting business analysis for recycled battery materials, engaging with industrial partners, and disseminating research outcomes. International travel to industrial partners in Europe may be required. We seek a highly skilled researcher with a strong record in recycling and characterization of battery or related materials.
This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 24 months, with the potential for permanence after project completion.
For informal discussions, contact Dr. Nildo Costa.
