Facility Control Officer
Location: Devonport, Plymouth, GB, PL1 4SG
Role
Compensation: Up to £42,400 depending on experience + Benefits. This is a full‑time, permanent position, 35 hours per week, based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard. The role is expected to transition into a shift‑based position over the next few years, ultimately supporting a 24/7 operational model as programmes evolve.
As a Facility Control Officer, you’ll play a vital governance and safety leadership role at Devonport. Acting as the representative of the Plant Management Group, you’ll be responsible for the safe control, coordination and release of work, including nuclear‑implicated activities, ensuring operations are delivered in line with plant safety cases and regulatory requirements.
Day‑to‑day, you’ll work closely with project, engineering and operational teams, influencing safe behaviours and supporting the future readiness of one of the UK’s most strategic infrastructure assets. It’s an excellent opportunity to deepen your nuclear facility expertise while building long‑term career progression within defence and engineering.
Responsibilities
* Control and coordinate work activities within the facility to ensure safe execution.
* Authorise and supervise nuclear‑implicated work in line with safety cases and procedures.
* Challenge and intervene where necessary to maintain safety standards at all levels.
* Collaborate with project, engineering and dockside teams to de‑conflict activities.
* Support governance activities and contribute to wider plant and infrastructure management.
Essential Experience
* Experience working within a regulated, safety‑critical or nuclear environment.
* Demonstrable ability to challenge unsafe behaviours and influence safety culture.
* Proven experience acting as a safety leader within operational facilities.
* Strong understanding of controlled work release and permit‑to‑work processes.
* Nuclear submarine or nuclear facility experience is advantageous.
Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline, or demonstrable equivalent experience.
* Nuclear safety or assurance‑related courses are desirable, including nuclear plant or quality training.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. Many positions within Babcock are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions; eligibility may be affected by place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and residency.
