Overview
The Medical Imaging Service Line at Derriford Hospital and its peripheral sites provide diagnostic and treatment pathways for a wide spectrum of emergency and elective patients from across the South West through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Ultrasound (US), Interventional Radiology (IR), Plain Film (PF), Nuclear Medicine and Fluoroscopy. The role of the Imaging Care Assistant is essential to safe and efficient patient flow across the department, responding to the needs of the service to provide support to patients and their clinician during their time in the department.
Responsibilities
* Facilitate the throughput of patients attending the Imaging Department to optimise resource use and minimise delays.
* Support service delivery during weekdays, weekends, evenings and bank holidays as part of a roster. This includes locations at Derriford, South West Imaging Academy, Derriford Research Park, Cumberland UTC, Derriford UTC, future Plymouth CDC and in the community in the pre-hospital setting.
* Register and book in patients on the computerised radiology system (CRIS) when required.
* Book patients onto the portering system (synbiotix).
* Provide reassurance to patients and give information about procedures; provide emotional and physical support during treatments.
* Report faults with equipment and take patient observations when required.
* Conduct point-of-care testing when required and cannulate patients when required.
* Assist with the preparation of clinical rooms and transport patients to and from the department in wheelchairs or beds, as necessary, including moving equipment between modalities.
* Assess infection risks and use necessary precautions; be competent in infection control concerning medical equipment in all imaging areas.
* Organise and prioritise own workload to maintain efficient and effective patient management.
* Participate in additional duties commensurate with grade and at the discretion of the Service Line Manager and Modality Leads; demonstrate duties to assist in training of new staff and students.
* Use IPM and keyboard skills to accurately enter patient information on CRIS; ensure data and alarms are correct and completed in a timely manner; adhere to the Data Protection Act and patient confidentiality at all times.
* Maintain yearly competences in accordance with the modality in which you are working; assess patient mobility needs and apply appropriate manual handling techniques.
* Support continual quality initiatives and daily checks (e.g., resus trolley and weekly checks with a senior staff member).
* Work as part of a multi-skilled team with flexibility in working patterns; act as a chaperone when required to protect patient dignity.
* Empty sharps bins and dispose of waste correctly; wipe down equipment and reset rooms between patients; assist in medical emergencies (e.g., resus or contrast reactions) and be able to deliver BLS when needed.
* Take patient observations and perform blood sugars and point-of-care testing as required; cannulate patients as needed.
* Assist in the training of new ICAs, Student Radiographers, Trainee Sonographers and Assistant Practitioners.
* In the absence of the inpatient co-ordinator, assess clinical urgency, coordinate with wards and log tasks in the portering system (synbiotix).
* Transport patients and equipment as required and ensure any infections risks are managed appropriately.
Requirements / Qualifications
* Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, Priority and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who can display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
* Be able to assess patients’ mobility needs and apply appropriate manual handling techniques; maintain competencies for the modality in use.
* Be able to work in a role that supports a patient-centered approach with empathy and confidentiality at all times.
