Job Description
Senior Electrical Engineer – Environment Agency. The role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA/telemetry systems would be beneficial.
As part of our Technical Authority, the successful candidate will provide technical engineering leadership and support across the organisation to meet objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and net zero commitments.
Responsibilities
Working within our Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future. You will:
* Be part of a team that manages, develops and maintains electrical engineering standards and safety rules for HV/LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures.
* Help develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for staff working on electrical systems and equipment.
* Hold a national incident response role which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.
Experience & Skills Required
* A good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Knowledge of control systems, including the application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in the development and delivery of safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong understanding of a risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies and implementation, including the application of Failure Mode Effects Analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing of electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, team working and communication skills.
Qualifications & Requirements
UK Driving licence
Role specific professional membership requirements – must have current membership of a recognised engineering institution and be registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or provide evidence of working toward registration with a realistic prospect of registration within 12 months.
Other Information
This is a hybrid role; the base location will be near to your home. We use smart tools to stay connected, and some travel and overnights may be required. You’ll have an incident management objective in your development plan and we’ll support you to find a role to suit your needs and circumstances. Appropriate training will be given. Interviews will be held via MS Teams within three weeks of the closing date. If you consent to being held on a reserve list, we’ll hold your details for 6 months and may offer an alternative post.
