About us
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is a fascinating place in which to forge your career. Tasked with keeping Britain moving safely and sustainably, we have a significant impact not only on road safety, but also the life moments that can only be enjoyed when people can easily travel to their destinations. As a Driving Examiner you will be at the heart of this mission, as you will help us ensure people get their driving future off to a great start. We are looking for proactive, friendly and safe drivers who would like to train to become fully qualified Driving Examiners.
Training and progression
We will provide all the training you need to get your career off to an incredible start. Our test centres are grouped into clusters, so we will ask you to select a cluster that is local to you. Once a job offer has been made, you will start your training online, before undertaking practical training at a local test centre. When this stage is complete, you will have up to three weeks of guidance at one of our regional training facilities before embarking on a fulfilling and varied career in which you will assess the readiness of drivers who are seeking to secure their licences.
Role overview
On a day-to-day basis, you can expect to meet people from all walks of life as you oversee driving examinations. While many customers will be understandably nervous, you will use your exceptional people skills to put them at ease while you explain your instructions. Using a tablet to record your results, you will determine whether they are meeting the expected standards and you will deliver both positive and negative outcomes with tact and diplomacy.
Requirements and qualities
We value diversity and inclusivity and require excellent verbal and non‑verbal communication skills. You should be calm and unflappable under pressure, and you must be a safe driver who has held a UK or EU driving licence for at least three years. You must also have no more than three penalty points on your licence, and have a good knowledge of the Highway Code and road procedures. You should be friendly and team‑spirited, with a passion for setting standards that drivers will uphold for years to come.
What you can expect in return
Aside from a deeply satisfying career and ongoing training and development opportunities, we offer an excellent work‑life balance through flexible working options, 25 days of annual leave, all public holidays and an extra privilege day to mark the King's birthday. You will also receive a range of additional benefits including an employer contribution to your pension of up to 27%.
So if you are ready to embark on an interesting career in which no two days will ever present you with the same experiences, then don’t hesitate to get in touch.
