Job Summary
Phlebotomists are instrumental to the NHS team. As a phlebotomist you will take blood samples from patients. The samples are examined in a laboratory and the results are used to diagnose diseases and conditions quickly.
When taking blood you must carefully:
 * not harm the patient
 * not disturb nursing care that the patient is receiving
 * take the blood correctly so it can be used for testing
 * label the samples carefully
 * store the blood correctly
 * deliver the samples promptly to the lab
Patients may be nervous about having their blood taken, so you must reassure them and put them at ease. Phlebotomists may work in hospitals, clinics, health centres, or visit patients at home or in residential or care homes. You will work as part of a team with nurses, healthcare science staff, biomedical scientists, GPs and other healthcare staff.

Responsibilities
 * By working with colleagues, provide a directorate‑wide phlebotomy service in allocated clinical areas.
 * Perform venepuncture blood collection as requested by medical/nursing staff.
 * Ensure blood samples are labelled correctly in line with Trust recommendations.
Person Specification
Knowledge
 * Basic IT skills
 * Basic understanding of safeguarding (desirable)
Skills
 * Effective organisation and time‑management skills
 * Able to work effectively within a team and under own direction
 * Dexterity at a level to perform phlebotomy duties
 * Venepuncture skills (desirable)
Experience
 * Ability to plan, prioritise own and delegated work tasks and activities.
 * Experience of caring in a personal or professional setting (desirable)
Qualifications
 * Good literacy and numeracy skills
 * NVQ Level II (desirable)
