Your role

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Trainee Multidisciplinary Advocate to join our South London and Maudsley Advocacy Team.

Join an organization dedicated to supporting those severely impacted by mental illness. We prioritize respect, dignity, and equity, drawing on the diverse experiences and backgrounds of our staff to be an inclusive, anti-racist employer, campaigning organization, and service provider that reflects the communities we serve.

The Rethink Mental Illness South London and Maudsley advocacy service supports individuals detained under the Mental Health Act at The Royal Bethlem Hospital site.

Our compassionate team helps individuals understand their rights during their stay and ensures their voices are heard in decisions about their care, including ward rounds, management meetings, care planning, and discharge processes.

We accept self-referrals and referrals from family, friends, and professionals for individuals who may be unable to seek support themselves, regardless of their residence.

How you will make a difference

As an unqualified, inexperienced independent multidisciplinary advocate, you will enroll in the Level 4 Independent Advocacy Practice qualification and complete it within a set timeframe, utilizing protected study time. You will shadow experienced team members, be observed providing advocacy, and eventually manage your own caseload.

You will receive training in various advocacy types, safeguarding, and the role boundaries, supported to develop a thorough understanding of advocacy practices. Your role involves acting on the instructions of those you support, empowering them to understand their rights and options, and supporting self-advocacy, especially when providing non-instructed advocacy.

You will deliver statutory and non-statutory advocacy within community or care settings, including hospitals, care homes, supported living, and individuals' homes or temporary accommodations.

As a field worker, you will be based at home, managing your own schedule and administrative tasks, and traveling between multiple client locations across South London and Maudsley, including team meetings and training sessions.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion

We value diversity and inclusiveness, recognizing that different perspectives enrich our understanding and service delivery. We support staff networks for ethnically diverse and LGBTQIA+ colleagues, and are proud to hold Disability Confident Employer status and be a signatory to the Race at Work Charter.

We aim for our workforce to reflect the communities we serve and encourage applications from individuals with lived experience of mental illness, from diverse ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ identities, neurodiverse individuals, and those with disabilities, regardless of age, religion, or socio-economic status.

Our commitment to anti-racism

We aspire to be a truly anti-racist organization, with a multi-year Race Equality Action Plan demonstrating our accountability and progress in this area. More information is available on our website.

We are passionate about improving lives for those affected by mental illness.
