Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Woodcock ward. Woodcock ward is a 19 bedded unit caring for children up to 11 years of age. The successful applicant will be expected to act as a positive role model, deliver high quality care and broaden their knowledge and skills within the specialist field of acute paediatrics. We are looking for an excellent team player with fantastic interpersonal skills. Paediatrics offers education and training opportunities. You will need to be flexible and committed to making a positive difference with a willingness to undertake further training. Shifts include a variation of long days, nights, weekends and bank holidays.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who have recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
Main duties of the job
* Provide care to children aged 0-18 years in accordance with Trust policies.
* Competently undertake delegated duties in line with the patients needs and offer support to the parents and family.
* Use knowledge and experience to undertake non-routine duties and make decisions within your area of responsibility.
* Carry out a range of clinical duties, including patient observations (blood pressure, oxygen saturation, temperature, pulse and respiration), glucose monitoring, collection and testing of urine/fecal/sputum samples and wound swabs, ECGs and blood taking, ensuring delivery of high-quality patient care at all times. NB: list not exhaustive and will vary by area of work.
* Participate in patient assessment, providing high quality holistic patient care and escalating concerns about patients to other clinical staff.
* Practice safe standards of care following Trust guidelines and policies.
* Provide clinical care in accordance with infection prevention and health and safety policies and procedures.
* Maintain the work environment in line with Trust infection control and patient safety policies.
* Work closely with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure patients are cared for in a safe and professional environment.

Job Responsibilities
* Provide and deliver a high standard of nursing care, recognising and meeting the specific needs of patients.
* Prioritise own tasks under the direction of a registered nurse.
* Carry out clinical observations on patients, recognising, recording and reporting changes to nursing and medical staff.

Person Specification
1. Essential
o Qualifications: One of the following at appropriate level (e.g., Level 3 SCQF-6 or equivalent): City and Guilds 3, NVQ Level 3, BTEC National Diploma, or demonstrable equivalent experience.
o Level 2 Functional skills in English and Maths, or equivalent.
o Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support (maps to Apprenticeship Standard for Senior Health Care Support Worker), or equivalent demonstrable experience.
2. Desirable
o Completed safeguarding (child/adult) training.
3. Aptitude and Abilities
o Effective and appropriate communication skills both written and verbal.
o Ability to work with minimum supervision to a high standard.
4. Knowledge and Experience
o Demonstrable experience of providing care in a healthcare or social setting.
o Ability to work as a member of a team.
5. Desirable
o Competent to undertake ECGs.
o Competent to take bloods (phlebotomy).
