Job overview

Be responsible for personal and professional development of all staff and learners within acute paediatrics within collaboration with the ward manager and Matron.


Facilitate practice learning to the highest quality through teaching, assessing, evaluation administration and practice-based work whilst supporting the Trusts Clinical Governance agenda.


Work as a change agent within the Trust wide multidisciplinary team in taking forward and shaping the future of nursing practice in the light of the local, national and professional agenda.
The post holder will be required to work clinically directly with staff.


Main duties of the job

* Education and Staff Support
* To Identify the learning needs of staff and undertake training needs analysis.
* Maintain data base of all training undertaken by staff within acute Paediatrics.
* Assist staff in completing their appraisals
* Develop, implement, deliver and evaluate development programmes for all nursing staff members,
* Facilitate the running and advertising the running of external and internal study days.
* Facilitate and encourage personal and professional development of staff within the clinical area.
* Develop orientation plans for newly qualified staff members
* Promote a positive learning environment and actively encourage innovation in clinical practice.
* Work clinically with staff.
* Develop assessment tools and assist staff in the assessment of clinical competencies.
* Propose changes to policies within own area but also Trust wide clinical and educational policies.
* Facilitate Staff Nurse and Health Care Assistant Development programmes.
* Facilitate Trust mandatory training and e-learning.
* Responsible for training staff in the use of medical device and ensuring passports are up to date.
* Ensure students are allocated students have allocated mentors and receive the support from their mentors whilst on placement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* To ensure an effective learning environment for staff, students and parents by maintaining access to a range of learning resources and acting as facilitator in the supervision and teaching of staff.
* Ensure that staff are educated in new skills and procedures. Appropriately developed in line with the NMC to meet service needs. Ensure staff are aware of revalidation and assist staff to ensure this is completed.
* To participate in induction, preceptor and mentor programmes for learners and junior medical and nursing staff.
* Act as a role model for all staff
* To ensure robust standards and frameworks are in place, in line with current recommendations, to ensure children receive high quality family centred care at all times.
* To provide clinical leadership for paediatric nursing staff.
* To ensure effective use of resources within the delegated budget.
* To participate in the induction process for staff.
* To agree and review service objectives and development plans.
* With training, be competent in the use of computerised systems employed in the hospital and community.
* Be proactive in minimising complaints seeking to provide local resolution wherever possible. Liaise with Nursing Management to investigate and respond to complaints. Help to develop strategies to prevent recurrence.


Person specification


Experience

* Recent experience at band 6 within an acute clinical setting supporting ward manager.
* Experience of managing staff
* Experience in managing performance and development through the appraisal, PDR and relevant policy.
* Experience of teaching both qualified and unqualified staff and of staff supervision with NMC mentorship.
* Demonstrate excellent clinical knowledge of nursing assessment and treatment of critically ill children
* Clinical leadership skills
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to use audit to improve the quality of the service and patient care. Knowledge of: quality, standard setting and benchmarking.
* The ability to lead on development and review of policies and procedures relevant to nursing and health and safety on the unit.
* Ability to co-ordinate the staffing rota for the unit


Skills

* Experience of leadership within a multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
* Experience of developing and implementing new policies and guidance
* Ability to use audit to improve the quality of the service and patient care. Knowledge of: quality, standard setting and benchmarking.
* Ability to use a computer for word processing, e-mail and internet access
* Change management
* Extensive experience within speciality
* Current issues in healthcare/specialty
* Demonstrate advanced clinical expertise
* Evidence of involvement with patient/user groups to develop patient centred care


Knowledge

* Demonstrate excellent clinical knowledge of nursing assessment and treatment of critically ill children
* Understanding of the Essence of Care standards and benchmarking process
* Familiarity with NMC guidelines
* Knowledge of the national policy context for delivery of health care.
* Understanding of responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act, and of risk management.
* Understanding of effective discharge planning and the nursing role in this.


Qualifications

* RN (Child)
* Evidence of further professional and managerial training.
* Post basic qualification in relevant area that has enhanced clinical practice
* Degree/equivalent in relevant subject or working towards
* APLS, PILS, EPALS
* Recognised Mentorship qualification
* High Dependency Nursing Course
* MSc level of study in paediatric physical assessment
