Job Overview
An exciting opportunity within the Children and Families Directorate to support and administer BCC school attendance legal procedures. The role involves providing information, advice and guidance to parents, schools and other agencies to protect children’s right to full‑time education.
Responsibilities
* Check applications for penalty notices from schools, particularly related to unauthorised leave in term time, ensuring statutory deadlines are met.
* Issue penalty notices and advise schools and other agencies on issuing criteria.
* Liaise with Legal Intervention Coordinators for legal proceedings and case preparation.
* Offer advice and guidance to school staff regarding prosecution for non‑payment of penalty notices.
* Liaise with customers and colleagues on individual cases, operating with high confidentiality.
* Establish, maintain and review administrative systems for all school attendance legal procedures.
* Communicate with defendants in consultation with a Legal Intervention Coordinator or Statutory Attendance Manager; attend trials to assist the legal representative.
* Review applications from parents for withdrawal of penalty notices and liaise with schools, notifying parents of outcomes.
* Maintain accurate records of court cost and penalty notice payments; collate pupil absence data and other relevant statistics.
Qualifications
* Good standard of education with evidence of continued professional development.
* Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
* Experience with computerised systems – word‑processing, databases, spreadsheets and statistical reporting.
* High level of digital tool proficiency and data analysis.
* Ability to work to tight deadlines in a pressurised environment.
* Strong partnership working, negotiation and independent initiative.
* Positive, sensitive approach to all stakeholders and collaborative teamwork.
