About the role

The UCL Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE) is looking to appoint a number of well-qualified, experienced tutors for our Standard, either online or face-to-face. Please note that the vast majority of posts are online.

Our large Pre-sessional Programme has been running for over 25 years and is BALEAP-accredited. It is extremely well-organised and we provide a high-level of tutor support and training with opportunities for professional development.

As an Associate Lecturer, you will provide up to 21 contact hours per week within a hours per week full-time contract. This includes using our bespoke in-house materials to deliver effective and engaging English for Academic Purposes (EAP) lessons, and providing academic and pastoral support in weekly tutorials.

Teaching is either completely face-to-face on campus or completely online, while all tutorials and assessments are conducted online. Our students are all UCL offer holders preparing for postgraduate and undergraduate entry into a wide range of disciplines and they are very motivated and hard-working. They are aiming for one of five language levels equivalent to IELTS to 8.

About the contract

We offer a 10-week contract from 22 June - 28 August. As a guide, this includes:

1. 1 week of comprehensive induction on UCL’s Bloomsbury campus
2. 7 weeks of teaching
3. 2 weeks conducting and marking assessments at the end of the course

You will be on an open-ended contract at UCL, meaning that you would not need to reapply to work in subsequent years, subject to availability and at the discretion of the Head of Pre-sessional Programmes.

Please note, those teaching on our online course will be required to attend the induction onsite in London but are not required to be onsite for the remainder of the course. They must however be based in the UK for the duration of the course. Unfortunately, no campus accommodation is available for these posts.

Salary for this post is Grade 7, spine point 34 - £48, (inclusive of London allowance pro rata).

In addition to the salary, tutors will also receive pay for accrued leave at the end of the contract. Please note, leave cannot be taken during the Pre-sessional course unless in exceptional circumstances and with prior agreement. Any leave taken is deducted from the final accrued leave total.

Candidates must be available full-time and for the entire duration of the course.

Candidates must have the right to live and work full-time in the UK.

About you

You will be an excellent and enthusiastic tutor who can bring your teaching expertise to help your students succeed. You should have a good understanding of the needs of international students, and ideally have awareness of teaching and learning within a UK university context.

You should have significant English Language Teaching (ELT) experience. Previous UK Pre-sessional and/or EAP teaching experience is an advantage, however, we welcome applicants who are seeking to gain EAP experience.

You must be able to deal with teaching on an intensive and demanding course, and have the ability to balance competing pressures and meet deadlines. You should be proficient in using digital devices and tools including Microsoft Teams, Word and PowerPoint.

You must hold a first degree in any field, and one of the following:

4. Cambridge DELTA / Trinity DipTESOL
