Overview
Job title: Consultant Surgeon (Colorectal) – 10 PA job plan. This permanent role is with University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and is to start as soon as possible. The post is to join the Colorectal team within the Surgery Care Group; you will be part of a team of 13 colorectal consultants at a busy tertiary referral teaching hospital.
Location: Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, SO16 6YD.
Responsibilities
Elective duties will include colorectal cancer MDT participation, elective laparoscopic and open surgery, colonoscopy lists, and outpatient activity. You will be expected to cover the unselected emergency weekend take on a 1:20 rota. Further weekend work includes emergency colorectal on 1:20 and colorectal ward rounds on 1:20, resulting in 3:20 weekends worked.
The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Qualifications and experience
Essential
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* GMC registration with a licence to practise
* Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement
* Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or equivalent
* Higher Qualification in specialty (e.g., FRCS)
Desirable
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
* Postgraduate degree
* Post CCT Fellowship
Aptitudes and skills (Essential)
* Ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
* Understanding of equality and diversity in care
* Effective communication with patients and colleagues (English)
* Good organisational skills, prioritisation, and meeting deadlines
* Calm, compassionate, and adaptable under changing circumstances
* Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in colorectal surgery
* Ability to provide clinical opinion on problems in Acute and/or GI surgery
* Experience supervising Foundation and core trainees
* Ability to teach clinical skills and apply research to practice
* Experience of audit management
Desirable
* Experience in a specialist area of colorectal surgery
* Experience in a major trauma centre
