About the Role
Wirral Council is seeking a dedicated and experienced Homeless Prevention & Assessment Officer to join the Supported Housing & Homelessness team. This Band G role is vital in helping vulnerable individuals and families access safe, affordable, and sustainable accommodation.
You’ll deliver a professional Housing Options service, offering advice, support, and tailored interventions to prevent homelessness and support long-term housing stability.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide housing advice in line with the 1996 Housing Act, Homelessness Act 2002, and Children’s Act 1989
* Identify risks of homelessness and develop personalised prevention plans
* Liaise with internal departments, health services, landlords, and support agencies
* Assist clients with complex needs, including safeguarding referrals
* Manage temporary accommodation placements and move-on strategies
* Conduct home visits and housing surgeries across the borough
* Prepare court documentation and represent clients in housing hearings
* Assess and allocate Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP)
* Maintain accurate records and ensure data protection compliance
Who We’re Looking For
Essential Experience & Skills:
* Substantial experience in homelessness prevention and housing advice
* Strong interviewing and negotiation skills
* Experience working with vulnerable groups and safeguarding procedures
* Ability to manage complex cases and deliver sensitive support
* Confident in using IT systems and maintaining accurate records
Desirable Knowledge:
* Understanding of welfare reforms, landlord/tenant law, and eviction processes
* Knowledge of the social and financial impact of homelessness
* Creative problem-solving and effective communication skills
