Route Position is a consultancy in subsea telecommunications cables, with primary expertise in Technical Programme Management (TPM), marine engineering and risk assessments. The company provides planning expertise to owner-led programmes, including Desktop Study (DTS) and Cable Route Engineering services. The team is dedicated to supporting project success through precise deliverables, technical oversight and innovative strategies.
Role Description
Full-time, primarily a work-from-home role with occasional in-person team meetings expected (6 -10 times a year). Occasional travel to project sites, client and supplier locations, training facilities, conferences etc. may be required. Optional offshore (vessel-based) project work may be offered.
The Subsea Cable DTS Manager is a mid-level role responsible for delivering high-quality desktop studies and technical advisory outputs for subsea cable projects. The position combines desktop analysis, technical report writing, client-facing engagement, and selective field involvement, with a focus on producing clear, robust planning-phase deliverables.
The role requires experience or strong technical grounding in subsea cable systems, marine geology or oceanography, and route planning, supported by well-developed reporting, project coordination, and communication skills. Working within a small, distributed team, the role demands a high level of independence and trust due to home-based working environment.
The Subsea Cable DTS Manager provides authoritative technical & strategic input during the planning phases of subsea cable projects, with primary responsibility for independently developing landing site assessments and Desktop Studies from first principles. This includes undertaking original desktop analysis using GIS platforms, archival and regulatory research, and interpretation of available geospatial, geotechnical, and marine datasets to define feasible routes, constraints, and risks.
The role involves iterative route development and technical coordination with third-party survey and installation contractors, as well as selective support to marine survey activities. The DTS Manager ensures analytical outputs are clearly documented, technically robust, and suitable for informing project decision-making across early project phases.
Qualifications/Experience
* 4+ years experience in subsea cable desktop analysis
* Strong technical foundation in marine geoscience, geoscience, or engineering discipline
* Experience, daily user of GIS software e.g. ESRI, Global Mapper, QGIS
* Proven ability to deliver sound technical studies independently, with attention to detail
* Experience coordinating technical inputs across multiple stakeholders, including survey and 3rd party DTS suppliers
* Clear, structured communicator, capable of producing high-quality technical reports and engaging directly with clients
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex datasets and make defensible recommendations
* Ability to work from home in a quiet, professional environment suitable for focused work and client interaction
Salary & Benefits
£35,000-40,000 per annum, site pay lift, annual performance bonus where eligible, enhanced sick pay.
