An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated senior trainee (ST4 or above or equivalent) with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement to join Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust as a chief registrar on the RCP Chief Registrar Programme.

The medical chief registrar will be attached to the Division of Medicine and Integrated Care (MIC), which operates Trust-wide, and the acute medicine team at St Mary's Hospital - contributing to the medical take, care of medical inpatients and same day emergency care (SDEC) services.

The chief registrar will have 40% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management and quality improvement. Projects will be tri-site within MIC and may also extend to other divisions. Projects may include service improvement, engagement and morale, workforce wellbeing, and sustainability.

Chief registrars benefit from access to a bespoke development programme provided by the RCP, which runs from September 2026 to June 2027 and comprises five 2-day modules that post holders are expected to attend.

The duration of the post is 1 year.


Main duties of the job

This post is 60% clinical within the department of Acute Medicine at St Mary's and 40% managerial within the MIC division.

The chief registrar will work with the divisional director and head of operations for the MIC division on a number of projects. These will include:

* Providing a bridge between senior clinical leaders, managers and the wider trainee workforce to improve communication, engagement and morale
* Involvement in workforce planning and improving the deployment of trainees to meet service needs and improve morale
* Service improvement projects to improve patient flow and safety within acute medicine
* Developing and maintaining up-to-date project documentation, and producing periodic progress reports

The chief registrar will also attend departmental, divisional management and executive meetings to understand the infrastructure and running of the Trust and how wider social, political and economic factors influence health care delivery.

Job responsibilities

The Chief Registrar role combines 60% clinical work in Acute Medicine at St Marys Hospital with 40% protected leadership and management time within the Medicine and Integrated Care Division at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Clinical duties

* Deliver safe, effective patient care within Acute Medicine
* Participate in the acute medical take, inpatient care and on-call rota
* Work closely with junior doctors and the multidisciplinary team under consultant supervision
* Support Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and specialty clinics as agreed
* Maintain high standards of documentation, handover and patient safety

Leadership and management duties

* Act as a link between senior leaders, managers and the trainee workforce
* Lead and support service improvement and quality improvement projects
* Contribute to workforce planning and trainee deployment
* Support initiatives to improve patient flow, safety, wellbeing and morale
* Develop and maintain project plans, documentation and progress reports

Education and professional responsibilities

* Participate fully in the RCP Chief Registrar Programme
* Maintain a leadership and learning portfolio
* Attend departmental, divisional and executive meetings

Maintain GMC registration and uphold Trust values and professional standards


Person Specification


Education and Qualifications

* On GMC Register with license to practice
* MRCP or equivalent
* Additional relevant degree (intercalated, masters or doctorate)


Relevant experience in specialty/Sub specialty

* Should be ST4 or above
* Evidence of satisfactory / more than satisfactory progress through training, including annual review of competence progression (ARCP) outcomes
* Must have approval of TPD to apply
* Should not already hold a CCT or be within 12 months (ideally not within 18 months) of completion of training on intended start date


Clinical Skills

* Competent in basic clinical procedures
* Aware of own limitations
* Consults senior colleagues appropriately


Academic achievements including research/publications

* Evidence of achievement appropriate to level of appointment at ICHNT


Leadership and Management

* Evidence of effective team-working and leadership
* Interest in and knowledge of the importance of leadership and management for clinicians
* Evidence of involvement in local management systems
* Evidence of effective leadership (e.g. evidence of leading innovations or improvements)
* Understanding of the local and national context of the NHS, including economic and political influences


Language

* Are able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
