Clinical Engineering Mechanical Services Assistant.
The Clinical Engineering department at Derriford Hospital is responsible for the reporting, management and maintenance of 44,000 medical devices. The team provides clinical leadership, expertise and governance for the whole life cycle of these devices.

Job Description
* Accepts requests for medical device repair and service from within and outside the Trust, progressing high‑priority work appropriately.
* Logs into and uses the Trusts Medical Devices Database to record all repair and service requests in accordance with the Quality System.
* Receives patients and visitors to Clinical Engineering with due regard for safety in a potentially dangerous environment.
* Performs corrective and planned preventative maintenance under close supervision on a range of medical devices following written instructions.
* Performs acceptance, performance and safety checks on new equipment under close supervision, following written instructions.
* Maintains service schedules, records scientific and technical documentation in accordance with the Quality System and the Medical Devices Database.
* Rotates through all Clinical Engineering teams to broaden experience and build competencies.
* Understand, work and comply with the Quality System, reporting any non‑compliance to the Team Leader.
* Supports continual improvement of Clinical Engineering processes through Quality System audits and acts as an auditor when required.
* Orders appropriate spare parts, complying with the Quality System and the stock control system.
* Ensures that personal and general test equipment is within calibration dates, maintained to professional standards and takes responsibility for all tools in their care.
* Participates in group meetings and briefings with the Head of Clinical Engineering and other team members.
* Generates income for the Trust by participating in external customer contract work.
* Assists colleagues within Clinical Engineering and aids the Medical Equipment Library as required.
* Ensures main workshop facilities are kept clear and well‑ordered to maximise efficiency, including mechanical workshop, store areas and trust lease vehicles.
* Takes appropriate precautions in environments with mechanical, optical, electrical, radiological, biological and chemical hazards.
* Takes appropriate precautions when decontaminating medical devices contaminated with bodily and chemical substances.
* Works close to patients on wards, outpatient departments, intensive care units and theatres during operations.
* Performs safety testing to BS EN 60601 and 62353 Safety Standards for Medical Devices and acceptance testing to the Managing Medical Devices April 2015 MHRA standard under close supervision.
* Performs diagnostic and fault‑finding procedures, calibration, quality control and functional checks on patient‑critical equipment under close supervision.
* Works safely with potentially fatal voltages and currents and with compressed gases under close supervision.
* Uses tools and equipment in the mechanical workshop safely and appropriately under close supervision.
Person Specification
Essential
* Interest in engineering – Mechanical/Electro‑Mechanical or Electronic.
* Experience of using software packages such as e‑learning, email and other similar products.
* Experience of team working.
* 5 GCSE passes at Grade C / 4 or above, including English, Mathematics and Science, or equivalent qualification.
* Demonstrable interest in further education and personal development.
* Able to work under pressure and meet reasonable deadlines.
* Ability to communicate effectively.
* Physical accuracy and good hand and eye coordination for small parts work.
Desirable
* Mechanical engineering experience.
* ECDL or CLAIT qualification.
* Full UK driving licence (manual) or working towards one.
* Experience of working in a customer service environment.
