Join to apply for the Global Sustainability Manager - Plastic role at Vrieservice, working with global FMCG client Unilever.
This temporary 12‑month role is based at Blackfriars on London's Victoria Embankment, requiring 37.5 hours per week. Compensation is up to £73,000 per annum pro‑rate, depending on experience.
The position focuses on shaping Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and other packaging regulations, partnering with the Consumer Goods Forum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and driving policy change.
Team Focus
* Setting and driving Unilever's plastics sustainability strategy.
* Ensuring good governance and performance management of Unilever's plastic goals.
* Reporting progress in our ARA and through key partners like Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the Consumer Goods Forum.
* Driving policy change to incentivise sustainable packaging.
* Shaping the industry to mobilise around our priorities and perspectives, such as EPR and packaging regulations, flexibles and reuse/refill.
* Protecting Unilever's licence to operate through stakeholder engagement and proactive issues management, ensuring our voice is trusted and respected.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and implement comprehensive EPR & regulation strategies, including the creation of tools and assets to influence legislation and mitigate the impact of new regulations to the business.
* Lead a cross‑functional team to ensure Unilever remains proactive in shaping emerging EPR regulations, particularly in priority markets.
* Lead Unilever's strategic engagement with key partners, including the Consumer Goods Forum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, to drive collaborative efforts in plastics advocacy and solutions to common industry challenges such as the recycling infrastructure development.
* Oversee the formulation of Unilever's strategies, in partnerships with the global functional and business group sustainability teams.
* Proactively manage external issues related to plastics and packaging, tracking emerging issues, preparing positions and drafting and reviewing external statements as necessary.
* Produce high‑quality briefings and presentation materials for senior executives and drive decision‑making and support key advocacy moments such as Davos, and selected industry conferences and events.
* Line manage Global Sustainability Assistant Manager to contribute into the above deliverables and run the Global Sustainability Plastic team operations.
Key Requirements
* Extensive knowledge and understanding of plastics and packaging sustainability issues.
* Experience in managing strategic partnerships and influencing policy at a senior level.
* Strong strategic thinking and ability to develop and implement comprehensive sustainability strategies.
* Good understanding of commercial drivers and ability to engage and influence commercial discussions.
* Passion, confidence and initiative. A self‑starter who can work independently and part of cross‑functional teams in a matrix organisation.
* Exceptional stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, with experience convening a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to drive action towards collective objectives.
* Exceptional project management stills and writing skills.
* Proven ability to build relationships and influence senior stakeholders critical. Calm under pressure, especially when juggling multiple deliverables.
* Experience of operating in, and managing team members within, a fast paced work environment.
