Overview
Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Mathematics at Royal Holloway, University of London. This is a full-time, fixed-term position (18 months) starting 1 October 2025.
Location: Egham, Surrey. Working arrangements may include hybrid or remote elements where appropriate.
Responsibilities
* Adapt existing methods and develop new statistical and machine learning approaches for detecting metastatic lymph nodes based on autofluorescence (AF) imaging and Raman spectroscopy.
* Test and validate methods within the biomedical and clinical context under real-life constraints of clinical integration, validation, and healthcare regulatory translation/ commercialisation.
* Engage with and report to Dr Alexey A. Koloydenko (Department of Mathematics) and collaborate with researchers in statistics and machine learning at Royal Holloway, the Biophotonics Group at the University of Nottingham, clinicians at the Nottingham Breast Institute, and RiverD International.
* Contribute to interdisciplinary training in biomedical applications of mathematics, statistics, and machine learning, and communicate results through presentations and publications.
Qualifications
* Strong first degree and near-completion of a PhD in statistics, mathematics, statistical modelling, machine learning, statistical image analysis, computer vision, chemometrics, biophysics, or related fields.
* Experience applying statistical and machine learning methods to real-world problems; proficiency in a programming language (e.g., Matlab, Python).
* Familiarity with topological and geometric data analyses is desirable.
* Excellent communication skills to engage with the research group, present results, and contribute to publications.
Project context
The project, titled "Integrated autofluorescence-Raman spectroscopy (AF-Raman) for intra-operative assessment of sentinel lymph node biopsies in breast cancer surgery", is led by Prof. Ioan Notingher (Nottingham) and funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The aim is to build an instrument enabling surgeons to examine sentinel lymph nodes during the initial surgery and, if needed, remove affected nodes without delay, improving patient care.
Salary and Benefits
* Salary: £41,374 per annum, including London Allowance.
* Hours: 35 per week; 52 weeks per year.
