Cambridge, United Kingdom/ Salary £40,000 to £55,000pa DOE/ Permanent, Full Time/ Visa sponsorships available About Nu Quantum Nu Quantum is on a mission to commercialise research generated over the last decade at the Cavendish Laboratory and to shape the future of quantum information systems. We’re working on cutting-edge technology that will improve the utility and accelerate the time-to-market of quantum computing systems. We integrate novel quantum photonic technology to form an efficient and scalable quantum networking infrastructure in partnership with world-leading companies and academic groups. The Role: At Nu Quantum, you will develop new photonic devices for our integrated photonics platform, initially focusing on waveguide-integrated superconducting nanowire detectors. Quantum computing makes new and unusual demands of photonic devices, and solving these challenges needs an open mind and an enthusiasm for cross-disciplinary research and development. You will collaborate extensively, both internally and externally, be responsible for setting up and running your own experiments, and have the freedom to pursue new approaches, supported by in-house expertise in photonics, nanofabrication, mechanical and electronic engineering. Responsibilities: Design waveguide-integrated superconducting nanowire detectors. Work in close collaboration with fabrication engineers to produce practical designs that meet project requirements, while taking into account process constraints. Operate a closed-cycle cryostat and associated optical and electrical characterisation equipment, and add new capabilities as required. Design experiments, automate data collection and analysis. Requirements Your Skills, Qualifications and Experience: PhD in photonics, quantum optics, superconducting devices or a related area. Practical and theoretical understanding of single-photon detection. Competence in developing experimental setups using optical (fibre and free-space) and electronic (including RF) hardware, cryogenic systems, and automation. Experience in electronic or photonic device development or characterisation. Good team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills. Proactive, willing to take ownership of problems and deliver results in a timely manner. Other (Desirable but not required) Simulation experience with Lumerical and/or HFSS. Cleanroom device-processing experience. Scripting experience, ideally in Python, and Git for version control. Experimental experience with integrated photonics and/or superconducting materials.
