Location: RG7 4PR, between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking.
Due to the classified nature of the work involved, limited opportunities to work from home are available. The successful candidate will predominantly work on-site at AWE Aldermaston.
Package: £37,860 - £56,000 (dependent on suitability, qualifications, and experience)
Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight. Flexible working requests are considered; please specify your preference in your application.

AWE is recruiting an Applied Physicist or Applied Engineer for the Future Systems Technologies Group / Non-Nuclear Components Group.
This role involves working with a team of engineers and scientists, focusing on hands-on physics experiments, experiment design, and analysis of results. The data collected supports hardware development and modeling programs, aiding the progression of our models and technologies.
The role requires some travel within the UK and to the US.
Key Responsibilities
1. Develop and maintain understanding of electrical energy issues in firing units for Electro Explosive Devices.
2. Understand the practical and theoretical aspects of explosive energy use.
3. Manage technical work programs as directed.
4. Plan and conduct explosive trials with diagnostics.
5. Maintain technical progression of the Electro-Explosives Team.
6. Assist in training firing officers and explosive workers.
7. Engage with relevant communities within AWE.
8. Collaborate with international partners and external stakeholders.
9. Participate in review and improvement activities to ensure best practices in technical projects.
Who Are We Looking For?
Essential:
* An undergraduate degree in a scientific or STEM discipline, or equivalent qualification/experience.
Preferred experience includes:
* Producing and reviewing technical reports and publications.
* Teamwork and staff development skills.
* Strong communication skills across teams and stakeholders.
* Problem-solving and innovation skills.
Desirable but not essential:
* Experience with explosive materials, energetics, firing system design, or diagnostics.
* Leading projects.
* Experience with shock modeling and 3D CAD software (e.g., Siemens NX).
