Offer description

Weare looking to recruit an enthusiastic, experienced and motivated HealthcareAssistant to join us at Carlton Group Practice. This is a full time role, however, part-time hours will also be considered.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience of working in primary care and a commitment to furthertraining, education and development along with excellent inter-personal skills,verbal and written skills. You will be working under the supervision of thewider nursing team to support our patients at our busy GP Practice.

TheHCA will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery ofprescribed programmes of patient care which may include assisting with minorsurgical procedures and vasectomy / carpal tunnel operations.

Thepost will include some administrative duties as well as phlebotomy duties.


Main duties of the job

* Undertake new patient health checks
* Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
* Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately
* Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
* Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
* Support the Practice Phlebotomist during periods of absence.
* Support the practice nurse team with the management of chronic disease clinics to include phlebotomy
* Carry out BMI checks as directed
* Act as a chaperone as required
* When trained, administer flu vaccinations, B12 injections etc.
* Carry out ECGs as requested
* Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
* Provide support during minor operations as required
* Prepare clinical rooms prior to start of clinics ensuring they are adequately stocked
* Maintain, monitor and control stock and equipment within the department, reporting any deficit to nursing / management team
* Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance and data loggers are recorded
* Ensure daily, weekly and monthly checks are carried out and documented
* Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy
* Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate


About us

Carlton Group Practice is located in the heart of Burton on Trent and is currently the largest Practice in East Staffordshire providing primary care services to a patient population of over 17,700 patients. Carlton Group Practice provide services over two sites, Carlton Street Surgery and King Street Surgery.

We are a dynamic and forward thinking Practice lead by 6 GP Partners, a Business Manager and an Operations Manager who share the same vision to take the Practice into the next stage of primary care development, whilst providing an outstanding level of care to our patients. The Partners are supported by 5 Salaried GPs, Clinical Pharmacy team, Paramedic, Nursing, Management Teams and an experienced administration team.


Job responsibilities

Job Description

Thefollowing are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There maybe on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependentupon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

In the course of seeking treatment, patientsentrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation totheir health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right toexpect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately.

In the performance of the duties outlined in thisJob Description, the post-holder may have access to confidential informationrelating to patients and their carers, Practice staff and other healthcareworkers. They may also have access to information relating to the Practice as abusiness organisation. All such information from any source is to be regardedas strictly confidential.

Information relating to patients, carers,colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the Practice may onlybe divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Practice policies andprocedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal andsensitive data.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Thepost-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and othershealth and safety and infection control as defined in the Practice Health &Safety Policy, the Practice Health & Safety Manual and the PracticeInfection Control Policy and Published procedures. This will include (but will not be limitedto):

* Using personalsecurity systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines
* Awareness ofnational standards of infection control and cleanliness andregulatory/contractual/professional requirements, and good practiceguidelines
* Responsible forthe correct and safe management of the specimens process includingcollection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers,storage and transport arrangements
* Management andmaintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the Practiceincluding provision, ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage bystaff
* Responsible forhand hygiene across the Practice
* Ownership ofinfection control and clinically based patient care protocols andimplementation of those protocols across the Practice
* Active observationof current working practices across the Practice in relation to infectioncontrol, cleanliness and related activities, ensuring that procedures arefollowed and weaknesses/training needs are identified, escalating issuesas appropriate
* Identifying therisks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a waythat manages those risks across clinical and patient process
* Making effectiveuse of training to update knowledge and skills and initiate and manage thetraining of others across the full range of infection control and patientprocesses
* Monitoringpractice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control,ensuring that provision of hand cleansing facilities, wipes etc aresufficient to ensure a good clinical working environment. Lack offacilities to be escalated as appropriate
* Safe management ofsharps procedures including training, use, storage and disposal
* Using appropriateinfection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean,sterile and safe way and free from hazards. Initiation of remedial/corrective actionwhere needed or escalation to responsible management
* Activelyidentifying, reporting and correction of health and safety hazards andinfection hazards immediately when recognised
* Keeping own workareas and general/patient areas generally clean, sterile, identifyingissues and hazards/risks in relation to other work areas within thebusiness and assuming responsibility in the maintenance of generalstandards of cleanliness across the business in consultation (whereappropriate) with other sector managers
* Undertakingperiodic infection control training
* Routine managementof own team/team areas, and maintenance of work space standards.
* Spillage controlprocedures, management and training
* Decontaminationcontrol procedures, management and training and equipment maintenance
* Maintenance ofsterile environments

Person Specification


Qualifications

* GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
* Good standard of general education
* Qualified to NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care
* Driving Licence with access to vehicle as there may be travel between sites
* Qualified to NVQ level 3


Experience

* Experience of working within a nursing or healthcare environment
* Experience of clinical systems
* Experience of working in primary care
* Experience of working in a GP practice
* Experience of SystmOne


Knowledge and Skills

* Ability to provide quality care
* Good interpersonal and communication skills
