Job overview

This is an exciting time to join the respiratory team as we move into a state-of-the-art respiratory unit in the brand-new Louisa Martindale Building. Your clinical working environment will include the respiratory same day unit on the 9th floor with clear views of the English Channel.

The post holder will provide clinical expertise and knowledge and demonstrate sound understanding of the issues related to patients with Asthma and COPD including assessment treatment and management of this client group. The post holder will facilitate and manage the provision of high-quality nursing care to patients with Asthma and COPD to provide optimum health and support for patients, their families and/or carers.

They will utilise skills of leadership and advanced clinical expertise to ensure a seamless service for patients, carers and staff and provide advice, education and support from diagnosis to end of life care. They will work collaboratively with primary and secondary health care professionals, supporting individuals attending the Trust either as inpatients or outpatients and ensure smooth transitions of care into the community setting.

The successful post holder will join an expanding team as we develop a Tier 3 Severe Asthma Spoke to deliver high quality care to patients with asthma both on an inpatient and outpatient basis: assisting to identify those patients who maybe eligible for biological asthma treatments.

Main duties of the job

1. To have excellent communication skills
2. To communicate sensitive condition-specific information.
3. To work closely with the respiratory service.
4. To ensure confidentiality and adherence to the Data Protection Act is maintained ensuring that full and accurate records of relevant information is documented in patients’ medical notes.
5. To be able to advise, negotiate and counsel patients and relatives on the most appropriate treatment.
6. To report and arrange repairs/maintenance of equipment.
7. To lead best practice in nursing care of patients with Asthma.
8. Supporting the Uhsussex biologics MDT by providing information and insight on patient needs

Sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds, and any role-specific criteria. For example, applicants for the Senior HCA role must be able to evidence a minimum of 2 years’ experience in the same role to qualify for sponsorship.

Please note that if you currently work for another NHS Trust or UHSussex and you are applying to accept this position as a secondment opportunity, before applying you must seek agreement and authorisation from your current Trust/Manager. Secondments can’t be agreed without this approval. If you are unable to gain approval, you should refrain from applying unless you wish to take this role as a fixed term position.

If you are applying using a Graduate visa as your right to work, you must have a minimum of 18 months remaining on your visa at time of application.

Essential criteria

10. Current RN, registration with NMC and any other relevant post registration qualifications
11. BSc Degree in relevant field
12. Teaching qualification /experience with an accredited NMC mentorship course
13. Experience of working with vulnerable adults and children including those experiencing homelessness, substance misuse, mental health, and immigration problems

Desirable criteria

14. Evidence of change management with relevant management/leadership course
15. Independent prescriber
16. Master’s degree and evidence of working towards
17. Counselling and research awareness
