Overview
Wessex Clinical Genetics Service is recruiting a Band 7 Genetic Counsellor for 18 hours per week on a 12‑month fixed term post with a focus on cancer genetics. The service is part of the national genomic medicine programme and offers opportunities within a dynamic genetic counselling team and the MSc in Genomic Medicine. Responsibilities
* With guidance from the Principal Genetic Counsellors and medical team, help individuals and families deal with a genetic disorder by:
o Comprehending the medical facts, including diagnosis, probable course, and available management
o Appreciating how heredity contributes to the disorder and the risk of recurrence in relatives
o Understanding alternatives for dealing with the risk of recurrence
o Helping clients choose the course of action they feel is most appropriate
o Facilitating the best possible adjustment to the disorder in an affected family member and/or the recurrence risk
* Maintain timely access to medical and genetics expertise and screening
* Manage your own caseload providing patient‑focused genetic counselling for a broad range of cancer predisposition conditions and predictive testing
* Participate in research, audit, teaching, and education; contribute to ongoing professional development within the team
This is a challenging, autonomous role; ongoing professional development and opportunities for teaching and research are supported by the team.
Qualifications
* Completed an STP in Genomic Counselling (HCPC registration or pending) OR MSc Genetic Counselling (with BSc/BA in a relevant subject) and registered with AHCS (Genetic Counsellor)
* Or RG/N with a BSc/BA or MSc in a relevant subject and registered with AHCS (Genetic Counsellor)
* We also welcome applications from recent MSc graduates without experience; if successful, remuneration at Band 6 Trainee level until competencies (i.e., GCRAB registration) are met
