Brief Description

You'll help keep our nation moving every single day. A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As an operative you'll work outdoors in a small team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our operative community comes from a variety of backgrounds, and this might be the first time you've considered a career in rail. We're focused on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you can demonstrate that, we will provide all necessary training to work safely and competently on the network.

If you make the grade, you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

About the role (External)

Operatives can specialize in various disciplines, but for this role, you'll become a specialist in Conductor Rail. Our operatives work outdoors in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. You'll be involved in manual work, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Being safety-focused, respectful of rules, and a team player is essential, especially when working near moving trains at high speeds.

You matter to your team

You are crucial to the team. You show up early, leave last, ensure equipment is checked and ready, and drive the team between sites. Daily, you'll support equipment maintenance and perform lookout duties to ensure safety.

You matter to us

Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We will provide training to develop both technical and non-technical skills. Transitioning from another industry, this structured training will give you the confidence to build a rewarding career in rail. Today's operatives can advance to technicians and team leaders, with clear career paths available.

Your skills matter

While rail experience isn't necessary, you should demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:

* Team-working: Depend on each other to deliver safe, efficient work.
* Communication: Ability to work safely and effectively.
* Proactive planning: Punctuality, readiness, and anticipating team needs.
* Working under pressure: Staying calm outdoors near moving trains.
* Following rules and instructions: Respect and challenge unsafe situations.
* Willingness to learn: Keep skills and competencies up-to-date.

Additional information

* Shifts involve days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
* Employment is subject to drug, alcohol testing, medical, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
* Driving license (category B) required to operate Network Rail vehicles.
