ROLE: General Maintenance Operative
SALARY: £31,
HOURS: 40 Hours in a week
LOCATION: York.

We're looking for a General Maintenance Operative who will play a key role in maintaining safe, compliant, high‑quality environments across HMP Millsike.
Role Responsibilities:
1. Completing planned and reactive maintenance and monitoring of all prison fabrics within scope.
2. Conducting tasks in compliance with Company Safety Policy, Procedures, relevant Codes of Practice, NR, and Statutory Regulations, ensuring adherence to the Company's and Clients' Permit to Work Systems.
3. Completing Planned Preventive Maintenance and Helpdesk tasks to ensure contract compliance and maintaining SHE standards.
4. Liaising with engineers and subcontractors, and developing a detailed knowledge and understanding of the site engineering services.
5. Being fully aware of contractual requirements from the engineering brief and supporting the development and communication of best working practices.
6. Understanding and completing all work‑related documentation accurately and on time.
7. Coordinating connections to existing plant/systems and effectively using and maintaining O&M Manuals and quality procedures.
8. Being available for scheduled and unplanned weekend working.
9. Complying with company and statutory regulations relating to safe systems of work, health and safety, hygiene, cleanliness, and localised fire regulation procedures.
10. Participating in a 24‑hour, ‑day operation, working to a shift rota pattern and offering out‑of‑hours call‑out functions.
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet the below defined requirements for the role.
11. Possess one of the following: Apprenticeship or equivalent, IOSH or equivalent, C&G/BTEC Mechanical and Electrical Building Services Engineering Parts 1, 2, and 3, NVQ with multi‑skilled engineering Level 3, C&G F Gas or equivalent, HVAC or gas equivalent, or C&G /2 18th edition IEE regulations.
12. Previous relevant experience in providing electrical maintenance services in a large, complex environment.
13. Basic to intermediate IT skills including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, and some experience in updating central data systems.
14. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with excellent interpersonal skills and self‑motivation.
15. Substantial practical experience with comprehensive knowledge of building services disciplines including heating, hot water, ventilation, refrigeration, environmental systems, electrical power and distribution, and public health.
16. A team worker with flexibility within contracted hours and a ‘can‑do' attitude.
17. Intuitive and proactive nature with high moral standards and absolute integrity.
Additional Requirements (What We Are Looking For):
18. Be a UK citizen, Citizen of the Commonwealth with your own indefinite leave to remain (not through marriage), or an EEA citizen.
19. Have a valid and in‑date passport, with no restrictions on your stay in the UK.
20. Visa's in out‑of‑date passports cannot be accepted as proof of Right to Work in the UK; a Biometric card and a current in‑date passport must be provided.
21. Have continuously resided in the UK for the past 3 years (no trips overseas longer than three months).
22. Must not have spent more than 3 months at any one time overseas during the previous 5 years.
23. This position is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and applicants must be prepared to undergo an Enhanced DBS check, complete employer referencing for the previous 5 years, and vetting to the level of Counter Terrorist Checked (CTC) if offered a role.
