Job Overview
The Department of Urology is a tertiary referral centre within Castle Hill Hospital, serving a population of 1.3 million people in total and approximately 650,000 locally. The department offers specialist urological care in a well‑resourced unit.
Location and Facilities
The unit includes Ward 15 (34 beds), a dedicated day‑services facility, flexible cystoscopy and urodynamics stations, specialist nursing clinics, and an on‑site fixed lithotripter. Ward 12 in the adjoining urology ambulatory area provides a dedicated facility for emergency assessment, post‑operative care and a TWOC clinic. A dedicated inpatient urology theatre and a purpose‑built robotic surgery facility house two Da Vinci Xi platforms. The department also uses a newly built day‑surgery centre that performs eight lists per week.
Staffing and Team
The team is staffed by six middle‑grade doctors (specialty registrars and clinical fellows), nine specialist nurses, one advanced practitioner and two surgical care practitioners. There are also six ST1/2, F1/F2 doctors.
Job Plan and Training
A standard full‑time job plan contains ten programmed activities: eight for direct clinical care and two for supporting activities, including training, teaching, CPD, audit, appraisal, clinical governance and service meetings. Additional SPA time may be allocated for research, clinical management and educational‑supervisor activity.
Teaching and Research Opportunities
Appointees will have opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching within the HYMS medical school curriculum and may pursue research and educational supervisor roles. The post is expected to involve educational supervision of at least one trainee per year, from FY1 to specialist registrar level.
Responsibilities
The appointee will have completed or complete educational supervisor training within a short time of taking up the post. All new appointees will be encouraged to develop management skills by taking on a management role, which may include assisting senior colleagues with the organisation of educational activities, audit, junior doctor management and recruitment. Personal preferences can be taken into account and training will be provided for the chosen role. Additional PA time is negotiable for more senior management, research or educational roles within the department.
