Southampton City Council’s Housing Operations team are looking for 4 skilled and motivated Carpenters to join our dedicated Voids Maintenance Team. About The Role: As a Carpenter within our Housing Operations service, you’ll play a key role in maintaining a safe, high-quality environment for residents across a range of domestic and commercial settings. You will: Carry out a wide variety of first and second fix carpentry, construction and maintenance tasks including UPVC installation and maintenance Diagnose faults, assess required works and complete repairs efficiently Work across multiple sites, responding to jobs with professionalism and precision Adapt to carry out basic tasks in additional trade areas (e.g. plastering, tiling, decorating, plumbing) Use Council issued IT systems, tools and vehicles in line with policy Ensure a safe working environment, following all Health & Safety requirements Support apprentices and trainees when required This role requires someone who can work both independently and as part of a wider operational team. About You: The following experience and knowledge is a must: A recognised Level 3 apprenticeship or qualification in Wood Occupations (or equivalent) At least 3 years’ experience in domestic and/or commercial construction and maintenance Strong multi trade ability (e.g. tiling, plastering, minor plumbing, brickwork) Excellent problem solving skills and ability to diagnose and resolve faults Good communication skills, with the ability to work sensitively in occupied homes A methodical, accurate and safety focused approach to your work Good fitness level and ability to work at height using ladders, access equipment or scaffolds Full, valid UK driving licence Ability to use IT and mobile devices for job management and communication required to undergo a DBS check as part of the pre-employment checks. As the work is varied a flexible approach is required to meet changing needs and tight deadlines. Excellent customer service skills, enthusiasm, and a ‘can do’ attitude is essential as you’ll be our ambassador when speaking to customers and suppliers. You will work collaboratively with peers and colleagues on a daily basis so professionalism, communication and customer focus will be essential to the role. Organisational, customer service, time management and high level of competency in using IT systems are key to this role. You will need to be able to remain calm and unflustered when working under pressure and/or faced with confrontation.
