Building Control technician Category : Agency Workers - Temporary Level 1 Name : Supporting Communities Job Category : Technical Justification : Project/ One Off Workload Peak Hours Per Week : 36.00 Start Time : 09:30 End Time : 17:00 Job Purpose To oversee a section of the borough and ensure compliance with building regulations, The individual will be responsible for implementing marketing and service delivery initiatives, as well as quality control measures, the collection of fees and charges, and managing their workload to meet objectives within set timeframes. Additionally, they will be required to regularly provide detailed information on individual cases or projects to senior officers during case reviews. Main Duties and Responsibilities To help oversee an area within the borough to ensure compliance with building control legislation, including the Building Act and regulations, as well as the London Building Acts, is a large part of the daily workload. This involves office meetings, plan examination, appraisal of calculations, preparation and authorization of letters, supervision of work on site, testing, identification of contraventions, enforcement, including attendance at court, and the maintenance of records. Additionally, the role involves drawing applicants' attention to other statutory requirements affecting their proposals, liaising with and reporting on the activities of other sections, including DC, Environmental Health and Local Land Charges, ensuring statutory consultation with external agencies is carried out as necessary, and working cost-effectively. The role also encompasses assisting with the assessment and recovery of fees and charges, protecting the Council's interests in all financial transactions, promoting Camden's Building Control service during normal contracts with building professionals, and assisting with implementing service delivery initiatives. Furthermore, the role involves responding to building control matter enquiries from the public, Councillors, MPs, and others with a legitimate interest, keeping records, including time monitoring, travel records, and other associated administrative and casework details, and entering/processing information on IT systems. Lastly, the role includes participating in projects and carrying out other duties and responsibilities as directed. Work Context The responsibilities of this role include frequent solo work and conducting inspections of all types of construction projects at different stages, including the use of ladders, scaffolding, and descending into excavations. The occasional exposure to noise and dirt on site is a possibility. Although initially assigned to one specific team, the individual may need to transfer to other teams as needed. In this role, the postholder must balance the demands of the public service with the competitive landscape of the private sector when providing specific services. Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Behaviours and Experience Qualifications: Essential: A recognised degree in construction/surveying or related faculty, leading to corporate membership of RICS or equivalent. Desireable: CSCS card Knowledge: Essential: Have a basic knowledge of at least one of the following: a) Building Construction b) Structural engineering c) Fire safety in buildings d) Supervision of building work on site Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of main legislation in order to prepare reports and schedules and where authorised, serve notices and take enforcement action, i.e. the Building Act 1984 and the Building Regulations
