Vacancy Information

This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.
Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.
Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

Salary Grade Range - Surrey Police £28,372 - £32,224 / Sussex Police £27,747 - £29,649
Working Hours - 37.0 Hours per Week

Location - Sussex Police Headquarters, Lewes
The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference.


It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.

In this role you will:
-Develop knowledge and understanding of Legislation and Guidance pertaining to the licensing of Firearms & Explosives and be able to act as an advisor to police colleagues and members of the public.

-Input and maintain accurate records using the National Firearms Licensing Management System and other in-force data management systems.

-Review applications to acquire Firearms & Explosives certificates to ensure correct completion and that all relevant legislation, policy, and guidance is complied with to facilitate the highest possible standard of public safety.

-Identify false declarations of criminal or medical history and refer to other Police colleauges for appropriate action.

-Interrogate national and local Police intelligence systems in connection with the vetting of applicants, certificate holders, referees, and cohabitees, recording results to assist the unit in determining the suitability of all applicants.

-Liaise with national and local government bodies, other police forces, members of the public, and certificate holders, being able to demonstrate knowledge of this specialist subject area and respond to queries and concerns with confidence and clarity.

-Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and character of work as may be reasonably required, including specific duties of a similar or lesser graded post.

The successful candidate will be able to manage a heavy workload so that tasks are prioritised with public safety and crime prevention as the foremost considerations. You will utilise the advantages of available technology to its best advantages to assist in the proccessing of large volumes of paperwork.

Skills & Experience

• Educated to GCSE A*-C/4-9, including Maths and English, or equivalent.
• Strong IT skills
• Ability to assess threat/harm/risks.
• Knowledge of, and the ability to interpret Firearms and Explosive legislation or a willingness and ability to do so.
• Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
• Ability to prioritise work to support the department's priorities.
• Ability to understand and manage the expectations of a diverse and demanding customer base.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, and experience of working with the public in stressful, occasionally confrontational situations.
