Job Description

The History Teacher delivers engaging and effective history lessons to students across a range of key stages, promoting a deep understanding of historical events, contexts, and interpretations. This role involves planning, preparing and delivering the curriculum, assessing and monitoring student progress, and contributing to the wider school community. The post holder fosters a positive learning environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and respect for diverse perspectives on historical issues.

Job Duties

* Plan and deliver history lessons in accordance with the national curriculum and school policies, ensuring lessons are inclusive and accessible to all students.
* Develop and implement differentiated teaching strategies to meet the varying needs and abilities of students.
* Assess, record and report on student progress regularly, providing constructive feedback to support learning and development.
* Maintain accurate records of attendance, behaviour, and attainment in line with school procedures.
* Prepare students for examinations by delivering targeted revision sessions and support.
* Create and maintain a stimulating and safe classroom environment that supports effective learning and fosters student engagement.
* Participate in departmental meetings, contribute to curriculum development, and collaborate with colleagues to enhance teaching practises.
* Support the wider school community by participating in extracurricular activities related to history and social studies where required.
* Ensure compliance with safeguarding policies and promote the welfare of all students at all times.

Required Qualifications

* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) recognised in England.
* A degree or equivalent qualification in History or a closely related subject.

Education

* Undergraduate degree in History or a related discipline.
* Completion of a recognised teacher training programme.

Experience

* Experience teaching history to students at secondary school level, preferably including preparation for GCSE or equivalent qualifications.
* Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver effective lessons that engage and inspire learners.
* Experience using assessment data to inform teaching and support student progress.

Knowledge and Skills

* Comprehensive knowledge of the national curriculum for history and related assessment frameworks.
* Strong classroom management skills and the ability to foster a positive learning environment.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with students, parents and colleagues.
* Proficient in the use of digital teaching resources and technology to enhance learning.
* Ability to differentiate teaching to meet the needs of diverse learners.
* Awareness of current educational policies, safeguarding requirements and best practises in teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

* Postgraduate qualification in Education or History.
* Experience teaching A-level history or other advanced level qualifications.
* Training in special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) or experience supporting students with additional needs.
* Experience contributing to extracurricular history-related activities such as clubs, trips or competitions.

Working Conditions

* Full-time temporary position within a secondary school setting.
* Standard school hours with occasional additional hours for extracurricular activities, meetings or parent consultations.
