Job Summary
This post is for a whole‑time clinical fellowship in Haematology with a focus on Haematology Diagnostics (including liaison haematology), and either haemato‑oncology diagnostics (SIHMDS) or Coagulation/Thrombosis, within the Department of Haematological Medicine at Kings College Hospital Foundation Trust. The post is a non‑training post and does not attract a training number /NTN in Haematology. It would however be an ideal opportunity to acquire supervised supplementary training in one of the above areas of interest and is aimed at individuals at or towards the end of their haematology training.
Responsibilities
* Provide medical support to the Haematology laboratory in the Blood Sciences Laboratory.
* Review and report blood films as requested by the biomedical scientists.
* Liaise with General Practitioners to facilitate timely investigation and review.
* Perform and report bone marrow aspirates.
* Report immunophenotyping under supervision, within the HMDS.
* Review patients in a weekly consultative clinic as per the applicant’s preferred interest (General Haematology or Thrombosis/Anticoagulation).
* Support existing trainees in reviewing inpatient referrals for suspected underlying haematological conditions and advising on further investigation.
* Support existing trainees in providing haemostasis and thrombosis advice.
* Participate in clinical trials activity.
Person Specification
Qualification and training
* Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
* MBBS/MB ChB or evidence of equivalent qualification.
* FRCPath (or equivalent) – desirable.
* CCT in haematology – desirable.
Experience
* Evidence of training and experience in clinical and laboratory haematology.
* Able to take responsibility for delivering service with supervision.
* Knowledge and experience of relevant specialty.
Knowledge and skills
* Knowledge and experience of relevant specialty.
* Broad range of IT skills.
Communications and language skills
* Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, colleagues in pathology and support staff.
Abilities and aptitude
* Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi‑disciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
* Ability to communicate effectively with clinical, scientific, technical and managerial colleagues.
Clinical governance and audit
* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
* Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and evidence of participation where relevant.
Teaching and training
* Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors.
* Experience of supervising trainee haematologists – desirable.
Research
* Knowledge of the principles involved in research.
* Evidence of involvement in research – desirable.
