Main duties of the job We are delighted to invite a motivated registered nurse to expand their scope of practice and join our Medical Retina Clinical Nurse Specialist Team. Our Medical Retina Suite comprises of four dedicated injection room, delivering a high-volume intravitreal injection service. Injections are delivered by independent non-medical injectors, working collaboratively alongside our medical workforce. The service operates six days per week (8am–6pm). Skills This is an excellent opportunity for a nurse who is keen to develop advanced clinical skills. Once fully trained and accredited, you will: Independently deliver intravitreal injections Undertake virtual and face-to-face patient reviews Participate in a nurse-led telephone and failsafe service, responding to patient queries, concerns, and safety alerts Work closely with Medical Retina Consultants, the eye theatre team, and the wider multidisciplinary team Training will be provided to support the development of advanced practice skills Ongoing mentorship and support from experienced clinicians Opportunity to contribute to service development and high-quality patient care This role offers a rewarding opportunity to develop specialist expertise within a dynamic and supportive Medical Retina service. Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities This role offers an exciting opportunity for a nurse with ophthalmology experience to develop advanced clinical skills within a high‑volume Medical Retina service. Key Responsibilities Include Undertaking accredited training to become an independent non‑medical injector delivering intravitreal injections within the Medical Retina Suite. Conducting virtual and face‑to‑face patient reviews in line with Medical Retina pathways and clinical protocols. Providing a nurse‑led telephone and failsafe service, responding to patient queries, concerns, and urgent safety issues. Working collaboratively with Medical Retina Consultants, the eye theatre team, and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, high‑quality patient care. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following essential skills and experience: Registration as a Nurse with previous ophthalmology experience. A strong desire to expand scope of practice and undertake advanced clinical training. Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide clear advice and reassurance to patients. The ability to work independently once trained, while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team. Additional Information The post forms part of a 6‑day service (Monday to Saturday), operating between 8am and 6pm, and flexibility to support this rota is required. Full training will be provided to support development into the role of independent injector. Person specification Trust Values Essential criteria Patient First Always Improving Working Together Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience Essential criteria Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC register Degree qualification or equivalent 120 credits at L6 Post registration qualification within area of speciality or equivalent experience Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies Provide evidence of supporting/ managing a range of learners in practice Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice Extensive post registration experience within specialist area Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service Understanding of personal accountability Confident of own knowledge base, aware of learning needs and seeks guidance when appropriate Able to critically review and communicate clinical information Desirable criteria Registered on MSc Pathway – completion of HTPA Competencies Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed Counselling qualification Palliative care course IT training Change Management, clinical practice development Multidisciplinary team working Interest in nurse –led care Organisational/strategic awareness Clear about professional accountability and autonomous practice components of role
