You’ll play a crucial role in performing and guiding microbiological analysis to help provide reliably safe, clean, wholesome water to our customers. Our microbiology team focuses on detecting faecal indicator bacteria and protozoa in our water supply.
The laboratory receives samples daily throughout the year. You need to be focused, adaptable, and maintain high standards of quality. Your responsibilities include analyzing and interpreting data, updating systems, and maintaining equipment. Ensuring analysis is performed accurately, in line with standards and timeframes, is essential.
Our laboratories are equipped with cutting-edge facilities and methods. We encourage sharing ideas and continuous improvement. As a commercially focused laboratory, we serve private sector customers, including other water companies. Expect a fast-paced, busy, and friendly environment. The working hours are between 4pm and midnight, with a 15% shift allowance. During training, you'll work the daytime shift (10am-8pm) until confident in the role.
Main responsibilities:
1. Operate instrumentation and perform analysis according to the Laboratory Management System.
2. Assist with equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
3. Analyze and interpret data; complete laboratory paperwork.
4. Maintain logs and equipment documentation.
5. Enter data accurately into the Laboratory Information Management System within set timeframes.
6. Meet sample stability and turnaround time requirements.
7. Prepare standards, reagents, and QC samples following internal procedures.
8. Work towards becoming a competent person according to Regulation 16(2)(d)(i) of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 216 (as amended) and pursue CPD.
Qualifications and experience needed:
* Relevant academic qualification or scientific subject at NVQ Level 3 or above.
* Willingness to work towards full membership of a professional body.
* Strong numeracy, literacy, computer, and laboratory skills for robust analytical practice.
Bonus points if you have prior knowledge or experience of good laboratory practice.
