Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in Day Surgery Unit/In‑Patient Theatres at the IRH as a Band 6 Registered Charge Nurse or Charge Operating Department Practitioner. The position is based in the Day Surgery Unit which consists of one theatre, one minor room, recovery and ward area, and the In‑Patient Theatre comprising six operating theatres and a recovery room. The unit provides peri‑operative care for patients undergoing a range of surgical procedures including general surgery, elective orthopaedics, ophthalmology and cardiology. Within the Day Surgery Unit the surgeries include gynaecology, urology, dental, orthopaedics, ENT and plastic surgery.

As part of the multidisciplinary team you will assess care needs, develop and implement programmes of care, and evaluate these programmes to ensure the delivery of high‑quality care to patients within the peri‑operative department. You will work largely independently but also collaborate as part of an integrated team. The Clyde Theatres undertake a peri‑operative dual training programme and multi‑specialty training supported by the GGC Centre of Clinical Perioperative Excellence. You will receive post‑registration education support from the Perioperative Education Teams and have access to training and education relevant to the role. Occasionally you may be required to engage in multi‑site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.


Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

* Permanent part‑time post, 30 hours per week; salary is pro‑rata for part‑time hours.
* Based at Inverclyde Royal Hospital – Day Surgery Unit.
* Work pattern to be confirmed.


Key Responsibilities

* Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates programmes of care with reference to patients, without direct supervision.
* Assists the ward/department manager to facilitate change processes within the area to ensure the team fosters innovative practice and meets patient needs.
* In the absence of the ward/department manager, supervises, deploys and develops all staff to ensure efficient management of a rapidly changing and developing nursing service.
* Co‑ordinates and carries out the provision of seamless care for patients from admission to discharge by utilising efficient verbal and written communication practices with all members of the multidisciplinary team, primary care services and carers.
* Ensures that all written documentation within the ward/department area is clear, concise, timely and complies with the NMC Standards for Records and Record‑Keeping.
* Establishes, maintains and develops effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives.
* Acts as a positive role model to ensure patients receive high quality care.
* In conjunction with the ward/department manager sets, monitors and evaluates standards of care within the defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the ward, directorate and division to ensure adherence to and delivery of a high‑quality service.
* Receives, labels, documents, records and dispatches specimens according to directorate and hospital policies and procedures.


Qualifications, Knowledge, Training and Experience

* NMC Registration Level 1.
* Good communication practices.
* Good organisational skills.
* Ability to work without supervision and own initiative.
* Evidence of continued professional development.
* Effective decision‑making and problem‑solving skills.
* Possession of or evidence of potential to work toward a first degree.
* Self‑motivated, articulate and assertive.
* A positive, interested outlook personally and professionally, with skills in the management of nurses and their delivery of care.
* Ability to accommodate the demands of the post with flexible working as required.
* Time‑management skills.

The postholder is required to demonstrate flexibility by working over a seven‑day week and, where necessary, engaging in multi‑site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
