NPEU Clinical Trials Unit (Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health, University of Oxford), New Radcliffe House, Radcliffe Observatory, Woodstock Rd, Oxford OX2 6GG You are invited to join the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU) as a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Public Health, focusing on improving the health and care of women and babies. In this clinical academic role, you will bring your medical qualification or UKPHR consultant-level registration, maintaining an honorary consultant contract and appropriate professional registration (GMC with licence to practise, GDC specialist registration, or UKPHR) Applicants not yet on the relevant register must demonstrate eligibility within six months of interview. You will provide leadership in applied public health research in women’s, perinatal, and reproductive health, with a strong commitment to addressing health inequalities. Working collaboratively with academic colleagues, policymakers, local authorities, service providers, and third-sector partners, you will shape national research programmes, inform policy development, and ensure that NPEU’s evidence translates into meaningful improvements in practice and outcomes. As a public health leader, you will provide expert advice to national committees, contribute to local public health responsibilities, and support interdisciplinary teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will mentor early-career researchers and contribute to training and leadership development within the wider health system. You should demonstrate:
1. A strong publication record appropriate to career stage
2. A proven track record of securing major external research funding
3. Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision
4. Advanced skills in analysing and interpreting complex quantitative and qualitative data
5. Experience working across academia and public health practice
6. Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills
You will bring intellectual rigour, political awareness, and the ability to navigate complex multi-agency environments while maintaining a clear focus on improving population health outcomes. This is a significant opportunity to act as a national leader and change agent in women’s and perinatal public health, driving research excellence and delivering measurable improvements in health equity. The NPEU is an internationally recognised, multi-disciplinary research unit based within the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health at the University of Oxford, New Radcliffe House, Radcliffe Observatory, Woodstock Rd, Oxford. The Unit undertakes research about pregnancy, childbirth and newborn babies. Oxfordshire County Council is committed to tackling the leading determinants of health and inequalities. This includes addressing climate change; shaping the environment to encourage active, healthy & inclusive lives; shifting services to focus on more preventative approaches; and closing the health gap between different communities. Oxfordshire County Council is also working through the Oxfordshire Local Policy to strengthen its strategic partnerships with the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University, helping to better understand and address the building blocks of health and to deliver the county’s Marmot Place ambitions to reduce health inequalities. This role is part time 0.6 FTE and is fixed term for three years. Applications for flexible working arrangements are welcomed and will be considered in line with business needs. Pay will begin at £109,702 per annum pro rata for full time equivalent and increase in line with academic pay scales. The postholder will report to the Director of the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health.
